How much did DVD's cost upon release

I wasn't really interested at the time so I don't have too much of an idea. By DVD's I mean movies on DVD, not blank.

What got me thinking was seeing these prices for HD-DVD's at around $30 a movie and Blu-ray is around $40 a movie. Was this the same for DVD's when they were new?

An off-topic note: If they really want to combat piracy, how about making movies cheaper so that I can't rent it 10 times for the price of buying it....

New DVDs were about the same price they are now if not less. In fact, you could find some insane blowout prices back in like 97-98 in order to get people to adpot the format.

I still have 9 DVDs in my collection that I picked up in 800.com's 3 for $1 sale.

Ive seen them at about $30 a long time ago, but that was only one movie that was that expensive

Not much more than current prices. You have to consider inflation too. I do remember being pissed at the prices though, DVD manufacturing is cheaper than VHS, yet cost more.

I could've SWORN they were $25 at release, and are STILL $25 (though I have spent approximately 0s looking at DVD movies at retail in the past few years, so I have no idea what they are now)

dunno, hddvd prices are 20-25 on amazon.
dvd was probably around that when its players cost 500 dollars. i dunno, cuz i just got a silly creative labs dxr2 dvd solution 150 bucks and i rented. i think they were about 20 bucks by then

oh no, dvds are cheap 12-15 dollras on release. quickly dropping from there. like 1 year from spiderman 2's release i saw it for 7 bucks a couple times.

Anyone remember REEL.COM? Back in the day I was getting my dvds for like $3-$4 shipped with coupons. Built up a heck of a collection.
