how much data does a typical Andriod use on it's own

My WM5 phone would seem to do some small data sending/receiving throughout the day. It wasn't much at all but I had no data plan and it added up to about 4 bucks a month. I'm on the Verizon network and have a neighbor who's willing to sell me their Moto Droid for teh cheaps. I'm interested in jumping on it, but I'll be using it on a pre-paid Page Plus plan that has no data, and data cost a decent amount by the kilobyte. I could never figure out if I could totally disable data on my WM phone. And was wondering if this is possible on a Droid, and if not, does it use up any data doing's it own thing? Even a meg a month would make it out of what I wanted to spend.

If you don't browse the web, don't sync your calendar/contacts with gmail, don't download apps, don't have any weather widgets, dont sync with facebook, I dont think it would use any data at all.

Edit: There is a button to turn off mobile network, so do that, turn on wifi, and you should be good to go.

I'm dropping them, too much money a month and absolutely horrible coverage. I hate T-Mobile and I hate AT&T. At this point my option is to suck it up and go with an Android, it's not the phone I'd want if I had a choice, but I don't hate them either. At this point I'm just coming to the understanding that GSM in America is crap on a stick and my love for the iPhone can't overpower my intense hate for AT&T or T-Mobile. If I get a smart phone I really don't have any other options as you couldn't pay me to use WM and the Pre is just not refined enough. Doesn't hurt my neighbor only wants $50 for his Droid either lol. I'm just curious if they suck up data on their own, I don't exactly want to disable shit unless it's a hog.

Not sure if you can even activate the droid on your account without having to get a data plan with it. At least you can't with a new phone.

Well, just make sure you change the APN settings. Do some Googling. Because it might still try to pull data from the network, and you don't want to get caught with a huge data bill when you're not even using it.

He's on Page Plus, which doesn't have the smartphone data plan requirements imposed by Verizon. If he was on Verizon then yes, he would be required to have a data plan to even activate the phone.

Since you're on Page Plus with an unconventional phone, you should go to Howard Forums if you haven't already been there. Lots of good info. It looks like the Droid will work on Page Plus, although you should be careful because I think sending MMS messages will result in data charges. Regular SMS should work.

Incidentally, how do you have NO data? Don't most of Page Plus's plans have at least a little data? Last I checked, they had 1200 minutes + 1200 messages + 50 MB for $30 and unlimited talk + messages + 20 MB for $40. Not much data but enough to give you a little breathing room without having to worry too much about disabling data completely. Are you on one of their lower end PAYG plans?

Page Plus doesn't give a shit about that, data is actually only something they offer as an afterthought, their "unlimited" plan only gives you 20 megs of data a month. I'll be using it on their .10 a minute pre-paid plan. I don't care about the internet much to be honest, but do like WiFi as my city has free WiFi everywhere and being able to install apps is cool too.

good to know I can disable the shit, and perhaps if PagePlus ever offers a data plan with mucho data I'll give it a whirl.

Will be using the straight $10 pre-paid cards, I figure 100 minutes a month will be more than I need, even their lowest "plan" is $30 which is more than I wanna spend. They offer data on the pre-paid cards but it's not cheap. I learned my lesson on my iPhone when I looked up 1 thing on the internet and it ended up costing me $3.50 in data usage lol.

Why don't you go WebOS? They have a future now or just wait until a new WebOS device comes out.

None?

Though that's not necessarily true. I'm finding out that my myTouch "leaks" data even though I have an invalid APN set any time I open up something that uses the GPS. It's only a penny or two when it tries to hit the data network and fails (because of the invalid APN), but it's still annoying. Other than that, it's dry as a bone.

Why don't you at least wait on the rumored VZW iPhone? I'd assume if it's not announced with the iPhone 4 then it's not true, but don't they usually announce the iPhones in June?

I already dropped T-Mobile and my iPhone has been sold. $50 for a Moto Droid is pretty good & if the iPhone ever comes to VZW it would be too expensive for me to even consider with seeing how I won't be with Verizon and can't get deals on a phone. Which is even assuming the iPhone would work with PagePlus, I know some VZW smart phones don't. If HP releases a new WebOS device for Verizon I'll be all over it, but for the time being I'm going to need a phone. And I figure a Droid will be the best best at the price I can get it for. I still might go with an Moto e815 but I kind of do want something newer with a touch screen.
