ebay or take it to a local music shop and see what they offer you.

some on Ebay go upwards of $500.00 how do I not get screwed?

If it's just a student model then I wouldn't expect very much out of it, however if it is a professional or intermediate model then you could probably get a more out of it.

Disclaimer: I'm a trumpet player so don't ask me to appraise your flute.

are you Petey? haha. check ebay or calll your local music shop, they should have a good idea for consignment/trade whatever.

Is there a model number on it? If so, run that model number on ebay and see what price the flute is going for on there.

There are a lot of different flutes. I'm sure there is a large gap in what a student level flute goes for and what a high-end professional flute goes for. You need to figure out what kind of flute you have.

Brass or Silver, huge price difference. Silver has a nicer tone I heard. Look around on Craig's List.
