How much cooling?

I'm just curious as to how much cooling you guys think I would need for this: I'm going to be building myself a T-Bird 900-system and shooting for somewhere between 1-1.15 GHz, depending on how my chip overclocks (w/ Asus A7V, Mushkin High-Perf PC133 SDRAM). My case is almost certainly going to be an Antec KS282 w/ 300-Watt PS (303PPX), since being in Canada, my case options are extremely limited. I'm looking at a Socket Freezer for cooling the processor (again, I'm quite limited by geography, but it should do the trick, no?). I'll probably also have a GF2 Ultra or just a GF2 64MB card in there, an SBLive, a Maxtor 15.3GB HD and a Samsung 40X CD-ROM. Will a couple of 80mm case fans (35 CFM each) and a slot fan (under the video card; 42CFM) do the trick? It may sound stupid to some of you, but I have absolutely no real experience with cooling :)

Hey there

Well, for the speed of overclock you're looking at, the cooling you suggest will be borderline - Athlons of any type kick out a lotta heat anyway, and when overclocked are even worse. The slot fans are grossly overrated in CFM - the one I have has a "true" rating of 16cfm according to the packaging - but it'll do no harm. If possible, it would also be good to open up the front of the case to hold a 120mm, and put an 80mm blowhole extracting air in the top of the case. The trick is to balance the airflow, and with one 120mm blowing in and two blowing out, that'd be about right. I've never heard of the Socket Sinker, could you point me to a website for it? Again, if you want the best in cooling for the chip, try to get your hands on an Alpha of some sort...though they are in very short supply, and even less availible outside the USA (I live in Scotland, so can appreciate your problem with getting hold of the best hardware goodies).

Anyway, good lucks to ya

The Socket Freezer is available from www.3dcool.com. I've heard good things about their products, especially their Tornado series of cases. And while I'd love to get an Alpha or something like that, it's extremely (read nearly impossible) to find those kinds of things in Canada, I've had no success whatsoever so far. The Socket Sinkler is the best thing that I've found that I can get here. Buying from the States, while a possibility, is pretty much out because of the high cost due to the exchange rate (1 USD = 1.44 CDN) and shipping (shipping to Canada is often $25 US through UPS, with added costs due to customs and stuff).

try going to a local computer store and ask them if they can order parts(especially if it's a US chain) for you, may cost a little extra but could be well worth it :)

btw, i'm in canada too, so i know how you feel ;)

Sounds like a good idea. Pretty much all we've got here in Calgary that's U.S.-based is *shudder* EB. Other than that, there's CompuSmart and Computer City, both of which are Canadian. And they're not really hardcore computer stores, you know? Like the staff for the most part isn't all that knowledgeable, and their biggest thing is sofware. Probably pretty hard to get them to get things like bigass HSF combos or a peltier kit or something. Think it might still be worth a try?

Athlons run hot, but they can run hot. In other words, you need good cooling, but extra cooling is just extra noise.
