How much coffee can I drink without becoming dependent?

For some reason I all of a sudden started liking coffee. In the past I've always hated coffee because I don't like bitter drinks. Just last week I drank a cup when I thought I needed a pick me up and all of a sudden I enjoyed the taste and drank a couple more that week.

How much can I drink if I don't want to become dependent on it to stay awake and stuff? A cup a day?

A cup a day, possibly, but not in the morning.

EDIT: And if you drink it as a pick-me-up at any time of the day, and have an addictive personality, it'll probably grab ya by the balls (do you have balls?).

'Yield to the dark roast Luke...' I can put down the coffee anytime time I want. Don't worry, your not hooked til you come to the sad realization that you'd give up beer before coffee and any doctor who tells me to give it up will be short one patient (one way or another :) ).

I wouldn't worry about it. Cafiene withdrawl consists of a headache for a day or two. And you'll know it if you become dependant.

Right now I'd say that I'm drinking it more for the taste and the warm feeling than the pick me up. It actually tends to make me even sleepier...

In the morning I wanna go try that McDonald's premium coffee.

Do you have, or have you ever been diagnosed with ADD? ADD and some forms of depression will cause stimulants like caffeine to have the exact opposite effect.

I'm a coffee-a-holic. Pure and simple. I drink at least a full pot before class every day, and usually at least half of a pot after class. On the weekends, it's 2 or 3 pots, depending on when I get up and what I have to do that day...The ONLY variation is how strong I make it. Some mornings, it's nicely mellow, with just enough zip to get me started, but other days, it's like battery acid with the kick of a Missouri mule...Summer or winter...I drink coffee...

If you need to drink it every morning to feel awake, you're dependent. But the side-effects/withdrawals of caffeine are so minor that they're not worth worrying about.

I've been drinking 6 cups without sugar a day for years now. I am not sure if i am dependent or now however, I can go to sleep an hour after drinking a cup.

I drink a cup in the morning, and usually another after lunch, and I'm fine. I don't drink any on weekends (and I take every other friday off) and I never have any problems on non-coffee days.

Wow the forums are messed up. The OP is now the second post for me, anybody else?
Victor, most coffee withdrawals involve a couple of days with a nasty headache, treatable with aspirin. I'd be more concerned about negative health aspects while you are drinking it, not about becoming dependent. I'm a two cup a day drinker, and a pot over the weekend:eek:

OP is second for me... and you only become dependent on coffee when you drink over 3 double doubles a day. I've done it, I've seen other people do it.

2 triple espressos a day is usually my limit. I can go a day or two without it and I experience no ill effects.

I've also experienced the sleepy aspects. Sometimes coffee puts me to sleep, but I've never really been able to find a pattern to it.
