How much can you comfortably splurge yourself at once?

the key word is "comfortably."

I was talking to a friend who has became a homeowner recently and i think she is really classified as a house poor. well, to each of his/her own.

I just drop like 500 bucks on camping related stuff (osprey pack, tent, stove, cookingwares, etc.) last week. no problem with my bank account. I guess I can easily spend $1000-2000 if I see stuff I want to buy.

Maybe it's just me, but it ultimately depends on what I'm buying. If it's truly a spur-of-the-moment deal ("oh, that looks nice"), maybe $500-1000? I always typically have purchases that are queued up, so I'd view that splurge as taking away from something else. That said, if I meet someone that's selling a pair of $10K speakers for $5K...I'd probably pull the trigger pretty quickly. :p

(LOL...enough internal reasoning for you?)

Like Alky said, time interval is important. Being thrifty, I prefer not to just blow money all willy nilly, but my son just got his first house, so we gave him a bunch of our furniture to help him make his house more comfortable. The plan was to get it out of the way so I can remodel the living room & purchase all new furniture. Does that count as "splurging" on myself? Or just a regular cost of living? Because if replacing my furniture with new stuff doesn't equal splurging on myself, then I suppose the answer is, I rarely, if ever, "splurge" more than $50. Though, last year, I spent $4k on camping items (I'm referring to the OP) & wouldn't have considered that splurging at all, because they were "necessities."

Need a better definition of "splurge" to answer well...if I happen across a good deal on something up to 10k probably I might jump, depending on how good a deal it is...normally I never spend more than $20 on much of anything unless it's a new gun:D

As an "impulse" I don't go over $100. More than that and I want to research something and make sure it's what I want and a good price. I *could* spend $500 without problems if I wanted, but that's more than I care to spend without researching something.

"Comfortable" leaves a bit for interpretation ...
I wouldn't mind spending a few hundred bucks as a "whim" ...
But bigger expenses are calculated, discussed, planned.

Now if you're asking how much we could stroke a check for - that's very different IMO.

depends on how often and for what. last expensive thing i got was a new rideing lawnmower. i didn't NEED it but i didn't like the one i had (a toro automatic crappy thing) i gave it to the kid next door and got a new one (a nice toro with a bigger engine!).

that was last summer. sure i have gotten games and such. I usually don't spend on myself as i don't need anything. We usually blow it on the kids.

oh wait i guess the last thing was redoing the basement. so about $9k we didn't need it done but we wanted a place for the kids to play. before the playroom was also my office. now i have the office all to myself (its so empty now). Now i need ot buy furniture for the 2nd living room and stuff for the play room. My son wants a sparing dummy (besides me lol) and my daughter wants a practice balance beam.

also might get camping gear this summer. The gear i had i loaned to someone and its gone..
