My computer is
I5 3570k (not overclocked)
Asrock z77 pro3
Cosair cx500
Sapphire 7970
8gb ram
Vortex 3620
500gb

I've read around and 500w seems like enough for max of maybe 6 months. Im just wondering how much wiggle room I have to overclock the gpu mildly? Can I up the clocks to match the 770 to make me feel better about my decision or do i have to wait to get a better power supply?

I checked out guru3d over clocking guide and the total power consumption at their clock rate 1125 was around 395 for the whole system. Link here http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/radeon_hd_7970_overclock_guide,3.html
Thanks for all the help

Your system should consume about max. 250W-270W when gaming with the 7970 at stock settings. Overclocked properly, 300W tops. Add 20W for an overclocked CPU. This makes sense, and is perhaps even somewhat overestimated, when comparing to Guru3D's results. The 395W reading from Guru3D is with a more power hungry system (CPU in particular), and the measurement is AC watts from the wall. With efficiency accounted for (assuming 85% efficiency which is pretty average), 395W becomes 335W DC.

CX500 has a +12V rail rated for 456W, you won't get anywhere close to that. You should be just fine with any overclock you can get with air cooling.

I have that kind of system but with a XFX 550w PSU and a HD 7850. Now when everything is not overclocked I get around about 220w on full load, (PSU test on OCCT). When the card is overclocked with just the core clock to 1100mhz I get it to around about 280w. Hope that gives you an answer, try it and see I guess, if you go to far it should just turn off. (Hopefully)
