How much can I expect to spend on a basic Christmas tree setup?

I'm going out after work to pick up an entire Christmas tree setup and I need to know how much I can expect to spend. We gave all our crap away to my GFs sister a couple years back because our two cats at the same simply could not resist batting the ornaments off and climbing the tree. But the woman is now crying about wanting a tree again.

I HAVE:

super heavy duty $40 tree stand

I NEED:

everything else...

5' - 6' tree (real)
lights
few boxes of ornaments (I guess?)
tree topper

Budget is absurdly tight. I have a $20 Walmart giftcard so I'll be going there after work for the lights and ornaments. There is a Christmas tree lot across the street from where I work but I haven't stopped by yet to check prices. I honestly have no clue how much a tree would cost. I could see it being $20 and I could see it being $100.

Trees will range anywhere from $20 to $100+ depending on type, size, location, etc.

Where do you live? This is important, if you cut your own, you're looking at 30-40 bucks for a GOOD tree. At a lot, you might be able to find a passable one for more like 40-50. 20 bucks at Wal-Mart will get you all the lights you need for an average, 6 foot tall tree. A tree topper and ornaments, if you're not looking for family heirloom quality stuff, tack on another 15-20 bucks.

Cut your own and you could get out of this for 50 bucks and the gift card.

The cheapest I've ever paid is $35, the most I've ever paid for a tree is $70. Of course closer to the actual day of Christmas, the better the price. Also, look for one of those charity tree selling places (like a local boys home or church) they usually have better prices.

Get your ornaments at the dollar store or big lots. You'd be surprised what you can get on the cheap there.

Wally world as you planned for lights.

Don't forget a tree skirt if you don't have one. That, or go with a solid color blanket and cut a hole in the middle.

Oooo... the tree skirt. Knew I was forgetting something.

Thanks guys -- I'll look into cutting my own down. $50 + giftcard was what I was hoping it would take.

EDIT: I live in Louisville
