How Much Can I Expect Off MSRP

    My wife and I are planning on buying a new car soon. We are looking at a Honda Accord EXL V6 , Nissan Altima 3.5 SL , and Infiniti G35 Journey sedans (the G35 is on the high side of the budget). I haven't done any serious shopping yet , how much can I expect to get off the msrp ?

    rule of thumb: 2500 off msrp for honda's = invoice price. you may get more depending on time of month and factory to dealer discounts going on. call up 5+ dealers around your place, tellt hem you are serious about buying an accord and that you are calling the other dealers as well, and they will all make you a good offer

    Since I am here, I second edmunds.com as a good guide to start with.

    Also consider the current market.

    V6 cars are not as popular when gas prices are high. Also if a given dealer has more than 2 of the color/model you are wanting, they are more likely to deal (assuming it isn't the most popular color/trim).

    Many people have better success with email than with phone calls or in-person haggling. You can email all the dealers in the area and then pit them against each other again and again until you get the lowest possible price. This works well for buying or leasing.

    Why are you so concerned about MSRP? So few cars sell for even close (these days) to it. The more important number is invoice and how far below it you can get the vehicle for.

    Just as a guide I guess. I am out of the loop , I haven't bought a new car since 1991 :)

    Edmunds has some good info to go by. I will fire off some emails to the dealers internet deparments. Thanks guys !

    edmunds.com and then fire off emails to all internet managers. They have more room to work with than regular sales guys (aka guys on the phone). Tell them you are serious and that this is the price you want, OTD, with no negotiating. Also throw in that you are emailing such and such dealerships. Once you find one that is willing to do business, setup a time, go in, sign papers, and drive off.

    Go to fatwallet and look for the Nissan thread. I know some of their trucks were 40-50% off. I think some of the cars were cut as well, not as much as the trucks and SUVs.


    Also GM has a lot of price cuts right now. Check out the Chevy Malibu and Saturn Aura.

    Just pick up the phone and call. Ask for the bottom line price. It's much quicker than any other method.

    I made one call with my last car, in less than 30 sec on the phone I had invoice price negotiated. 24 hrs later when I arrived to take delivery I got them below invoice which was 25% off MSRP.

    If you think going to websites, emailing and playing WoW while you wait for a response is better, then have at it. I have found from tales of others that dealers aren't all that responsive to emails.

    It also helps to ask around to find out which dealerships in your area are more responsive to negotiating. I have to leave town to get a deal, but all the dealerships outside town know that, so getting a deal for me is just a matter of a few phone calls. It also helps to know EXACTLY what you want -- model, trim, color and options AND what you are willing to settle for if they don't have it in inventory.

    Always ask for the Internet/Fleet managers. They are the ones who can get you a deal quickly, based on my experience.

    What did you do to "get them below invoice" at pickup? Or was the price you originally negotiated on the phone, which also happened to be below invoice?
