How much can a T3 cost??

I know it's multi K per month, but with all the corporate sponsors SETI has, shouldn't they be able to handle the expense? Another 45 Mbps would really help...

Obviously the project has grown past the place where it should be sharing anything with a lowly college.
Seti@Home has a lot of users, a lot of teams and a lot of sponsors / potential sponsors.

The project should have it's own dedicated bandwidth, that is what is needed for it to move ahead.

SETI has been stalled before. Prior to the Seti@Home project there were problems. Since S@H started there have been problems.
It's time for a little more "outside the box" thinking.

No matter how you slice it, Berkley isn't up to the task of hosting the Seti@Home project
Time to grow up and leave home , get a real job and all that stuff for S@H.
There are 3.5 million of us being held hostage by some beurocratic college network admin. (IMHO)

You don't have to agree with me, you don't have to like my opinions, you don't even have to read this post.
I appreciate those who disagree with me, but you have to understand that along with lots of other people I have dedicated 24/7 cpu cycles to this project for nearly 3 years. I feel it's completely unreasonalble that they continue to depend on the place that is burning us this way.
Getting dedicated bandwidth separate from and inaccable to the U is absolutely critical to the future of the project.

Off the wall....but....Why don't we start a sponsorship and fund drive for the project?

Start a thread to get as much feedback as possible to compose/write a TeAm email to all the founders and principals of the Seti@home project asking them EXACTLY what the project needs.
Whether it's a T1/2/3 or possibly secure load sharing server partners...find out what they feel is most important for the project.

Next, research ISP's ect. in UCB's area to get the exact cost of these T1/2/3/ connections per month and also the install charges.

Then compose a well thought out email to send out to EVERYONE we know, including Intel/IBM/Microsoft...ect ect....heavy hitters to individual people, introducing the project...stating it's purpose, it's needs and welcoming them to contribute as a monthly sponsor or even as a one time donation.

Couldn't hurt could it????

We raised well over 2000 dollars for Dave didn't we??? That was just from our little team...let's take this worldwide!! 😀

Well, think about this.

How many active TA members for SETI are there? 50% of the total? Is that a close estimate? That means about 1000 people.

Extra bandwidth would cost Berkeley $300 more per month?

If we all kicked in $5 (say, via Paypal, to Berkeley - I'm assuming there's a central collection point on their end?) that would be $5000! Or, almost 18 months of extra bandwidth!

conjur:

I would be more than willing to sponsor part of this project myself (monthly contributor), I do believe that we need to go not only internally, but to everyone we can reach as I have heard those T3's are many thousands per month. We need some exact figures so we know what the goals are.

<< However I agree more pipe would be nice. 🙂 >>

Please don't make me say this.........Oh my....must fight the urge......Uh....that's what she .......NO NO must fight it.......That's what she said!!!!! There you made me say it!

Good idea.
How shall we proceed?

If this idea does not fly... How can we get a connection just for us?
Someone at Berkley connected through their local network, connected to something that we buy?
Something that has nothing to do with Berkley's bandwidth, like a satellite or wireless connection?
