How much can a license plate rim cover before it's illegal?

I got some license plate rims from Canada and they seem to cover a lot of the plate, but then I saw that pretty well everyone around me has the same sort of covering going on. You can fully make out the license plate number and at the bottom only about 1/4 of the top of the word ALABAMA, and then on the left and right you can make out the top half of the expiry dates on the plates. Now that seems strictly speaking illegal to me, but I'd say at least 10% of cars have license plate rims and they call cover up at least this much!
 
My neighbor is a local cop and he said as long as the number is visible it's OK. Now this is Pennsylvania and the laws in your state may vary. He did say the PA regulation states the plate must not have anything covering more than 3/4" around the perimeter and all registration stickers must be visible and in the proper location.

They are visible - just not visible enough to totally read them unless you're up close and can see over top where the rim sticks out too far...since it's not flush with the plate totally.
 
Get a motorcycle plate and mount it on your car.
Preferrably one with the Green Forest background and letters NMVMNVN.
You guys have that plate in Alabama?

You mean you'd actually want to cover up one of our BEAUTIFUL Alabama tags with some Canadian propaganda? 😛 I'm curious to know what the requirements are too. I'm planning on putting a UA alumni rim around mine and I'd like to find one that covers as much of the new tag as possible (thought about springing for a UA tag since it looks better and my car won't embarrass the university anymore.) I hate the new tags for this year (and the next 5 long years.) I didn't like the old ones either, but at least they had nice neutral, black numbers. Now we've got the heinous red letters and lovely blue trim with the goofy song title to embarass us even more when we leave the state. My mom said she saw a tag cover that you put on that actually superimposed most of the old design onto the new tag for those that prefered the old design (seems like a sure fire way to be pulled over constantly by cops in couple years once the old tags are phased out if you ask me.) But if that's legal, I'm assuming most reasonable rim covers are legal.

Also check with the county(and city), as some counties allow them and some don't.

So if the state doesn't say soemthing the county or local Gov. might. But go to the local Police office and just ask.
