How much BTU of an air conditioner would I need to cool a 10'x10' room?

It's my computer room and it sure does get hot in here sometimes. I'm just wondering how much BTUs an air con would need to do a nice job of cooling down this room?

I imagine you could could get by with one of the smallest air conditioners (window-mounted?) in a closed room.

Could you lay two men head to toe in the room? That's about 12'.

5000 - 7500 btus I would imagine. I have a 5000 btu one and it cools 13X13 room down.

EDIT: Used to be 12X12 was standard room size, but it isn't always the case.

Yeah, just about. You could actually lay two of me and that would be the height/width of the room. I'm 5'6".

Also be sure to check the voltage of the windows unit. A small one like in my room is 110 volt. A bigger AC unit is 220 volt.

So, 11x11. That calculator estimates about 6000BTUs for a normal 11x11 room. That seems about right.

Cool, thanks. I'm going to start saving for one. I only have a Vornado fan which blasts warm hot air at me.

Have you had a window AC before? If the one you get is anything like mine, it sucks power like there is no tommorrow, and your room is either ice cold or steaming hot.

I got a 10kbtu window ac unit in a room much bigger than that and it keeps things real cool. Got it at costco. It's a Westinghouse. Paid 199.00 for it. Has 3 speeds and thermo.controled. Very quiet in the low speed mode. Have no prob.sleeping with it on...

I bought an $85 unit from home depot (maytag) last week. It was 5000 and says it's good for 150 square feet I believe. I returned it as it could not lower the temp in my garage even a single degree (it's much bigger than 150 and I didn't want to buy an 8000+). The air coming out of it was 66, but it just didn't make enough of it. Such an AC unit for you would be adequate though. Also in new york you're not as likely to get the scorching die-in-hell heat we've had here. I do know that computers can jack the temp up in a room majorly though.

On mine it said $33/year, for what that's worth. It didn't specify how much you'd use it or anything.

Save up and get a Panasonic 5200 Btu. You can get one for less then $150.00 and they're quiet and efficient. In the long run you make out in electricity.
