How much better the HD 5870 over GTX 460?

I'm looking at getting a new video card before the end of the month and the GTX 460 1GB can be had for $225 CAD and the HD 5870 is $350 CAD.

Is the 5870 $125 better than the lowly 460?

I do some gaming but mostly running my computer under Linux, so driver compatibility is important.

Moved out of The Garage and into Video Cards and Graphics.

also what's the cost of the hp per dollar .. maybe this is a good way to figure out what one you need or want.

If you want a real graphics powerhouse the Cypress HD5870 is the one to get.
If you want a pretty good video card in the mid range category then go with the GTX460.
The 5870 is considered a high performance card and naturally cost more.
It's a lot faster than a GTX460 but "you pay to play".
Both are very good,popular cards...if you have the means, I recommend picking up a 5870.

Depends of your gaming resolution - at 2560x1200 the 5870 will satisfy you more. Under that the GTX 460 will probably be enough.

Of course my experience is windows based.

Some people say that for Linux NVIDIA drivers are much better, so dunno. I'll let that part of the advice for Linux users.

If you're considering paying 350 for a 5870 you may as well also consider the GTX470 for 300. Trades blows with the 5870 for less money.

This is also true, but a 5870 can overclock too, although scaling less with increasing clock speeds than the 460. To answer the original question though, "No", the 5870 is not 125.00 faster than a GTX460.

The 5870 is probably worth the extra money. It is a good deal faster.

I do not use Linux, but I hear Nvidia > AMD in this department. So with that being said I'd get the GTX460 (or GTX470 as someone else suggested).

Hmm, and why is that ?
I have used the fglrx drivers without issue for over a year.. I can't upgrade to the latest ones, since they don't make drivers for the kernel version I am using with my older radeon, but I can't say AMD's drivers aren't good.

I don't use compiz, but I have played many openGL games.

The mesa drivers blow chunks though.

OP, I would wait for the new 6xxx line, then the price drop on all the other cards that come with a new release. About 1-2 months away if you can wait.

Definitely closer to a better price/performance ratio. A good alternative. If the OP was using Windows primarily I'd say take your pick, but his Linux use needs to be considered.
