Ok, I know it's $34 better:

2x512 Corsair Value Select @ Newegg

vs.

2x512 Corsair XMS @ Newegg

But what's the real-world gaming / overall performance advantage?

Can anyone suggest / link to an article with benchmarks? I've seen a lot of contradictory opinions on these boards, from "What do you expect with value RAM?" to "You absolutely do NOT need high performance memory."

I'm more interested in price/performance ratio than future-proofing or squeezing out every last fps.

Basic System Specs: A64 3000+ (modest oc to 2.15 GHz) s754; Abit KV8 Pro mobo, Gigabyte 6600GT.

Thanks in advance.

I never had any problems with the Value Select memory. With an A64, pretty much any damn memory will do ;) .

corsair value timings for a64 chips dont mean much because the amd64 has a built in ddr memory controller. ocz or corsair vs is your best bet even if you want to oc just lower the frequency on your ram and raise the fsb.
