$0.00 My company gives us phones, we pay nothing. That is now my expectation on the value of smartphones.

I have a Galaxy S6 I bought shortly after they came on the market. I'm happy with the phone so I guess you could say that I would pay at least $600-700 for a smart phone.

In 1995 I paid $2000 for a Packard Bell with a 75 MHz Pentium, 32mb of RAM, 1GB hard drive and network connectivity of 14.4 kb/s

My current phone (for less than half that) has a quad core 2ghz processor, 4gb of RAM and 64GB of storage. And has network connectivity of ~40Mbps. And I can carry it around in my pocket.

So current smart phone prices are a good deal in my book.

I pay ~ $43 a month for my phone (Nexus 5x) unlimited text and voice and 1 gig of data a month. The phone cost is $18 a month of that $43. I'm happy.

Before that I was content with "last years flagship" for the $200-$300 range.

For myself I'd say from £329 upwards is probably a good starting point. As for upper limit that depends on how much value you put on the added features, so I'd compare a Oneplus 3 to the Galaxy S7 and ask if the better screen, camera, microSD, dust/water resistance is worth another £300. As I probably spend more than double the amount of time daily on my phone than on my desktop. I want a pleasant and productive experience so for me the answer is yes it is worth it... and I think that's a good deal.

But there are people who's lifestyle see's very little return from having a good internet enabled computer in their pocket so even if they were £50 they would have no interest
From an economic point of view its also worth noting that £700 is perhaps a weeks work for some people and a mornings work for others.

My first smartphone was ~$100. That turned out to be too cheap, and too slow. So I bought another for $300 (Nexus 5X on sale.) I'm liking that level.

I don't concern myself with prices; I am ATOT rich.

I disagree. Rich people tend to have high incomes and high outflows. It is like a car engine that is running rich. That means the engine is getting too much fuel (per unit of air), burns through it, and wastes a lot.

I think you are thinking of wealth. One does not become wealthy by excessive spending of money.

Get a Nexus 6p. It came out in late 2015, so it's fairly modern, it has top notch hardware/build quality, the camera is great, the battery life is great, it has an awesome screen, and the 64GB version is under $400 now.

I most recently paid $250 for $100 off the Nexus 5x with the Project Fi promotion.

My previous phone, the SGS2, I bought new on Amazon (international version) just prior to US release of that phone for ~$550-600--but I only bought that because I used it as the first purchase with my then-new Chase Freedom card to qualify for what was, then, and instant $300 cash back on that purchase....so I paid $250-300 for it, new, in...2011?

So I guess I am willing to pay ~$300 or less every 5 or 10 years.

I like the new unlocked Motorola G4 Plus for around $250-$300 with no contract.

Time to switch to Android.

$0.

I don't trust myself with a $700 iPhone and to not drop it. Alternative I came up with is a bargain basement $120 tablet with wifi and a separate $50 retarded phone for $10/month.

My Galaxy S5's 2-year contract recently ended, so I'll wait 'til there's a good deal again before I go for the S7.

There is no device I use more than my phone, so I think the $700 I paid for it is reasonable.

$120 and no monthly payments. That basically gets me a Tracphone and I just buy minutes on occasion. Mine has 5.1" screen and Android so I never really understood the point of a more expensive phone that basically runs all the same apps.

Bought my wife an Honor 5x for $160 a month ago. LOT of bang for buck on that thing. This was after she cracked the screen on her MotoX Pure. She was devastated, I didn't care.

Used to be my personal threshold was about $200 or so, my previous phone was a Nexus 5 about a year after release. Nowadays for my personal smart phone I look to spend well under $100 and preferably $50. The 2nd Gen Moto E which I got for like $40 is doing fine for me and I don't really miss having a more expensive phone. Sure the lag is sometimes slightly worse but it's not like I'm going back to using a Pentium 2 MMX workstation or something.

I've done $300 in the past. Even that seems way expensive though. Wait a few months and it's on sale for like $99 or less.

Still on the subsidized/contract model though, because there is no way in hell I'm giving up my Verizon unlimited data until forced. Which probably will be Nov 2017 when this contract expires unfortunately.

$400 is about my top price. I like buying the phone out right vs getting contract phones. I'm also not one of those people that feel the need to upgrade every single time a new model comes out. I still have a Nexus 4. Though I'm sorta in the market for a new one, but more just keeping an eye out until something catches my attention. I really want to find a more secure/privacy centric phone, and there is not much of that at this point.
