I am building a new computer for my brother and i know that he will be upgrading to xp in october when it comes out, but i am wondering if i should buy an oem win2k now and then pay for the upgrade, or just have him use the win98 cd i am using and buy the full version. Any suggestions?

Is he a student? (K-12 or College) If so then you can pickup a student liscense for XP for $50 when it comes out (roughly. if it goes by traditional pricing XP home will be $46 and XP Pro will be $54). You won't get an install cd with the liscense but you do get the right to use the software (which means you can just get a copy of the cd from a friend or off the net and it's legal).

You should be able to order it here

MGMorden where do you find it student license on the web site? Do you call the toll free #? I may have overlooked it.

Normal... I think someone posted a copy of a press release saything that REAL price is gonna be $149 for XP Home, and $249 for XP Pro.

This pretty much puts it in line with 2K/NT.

There might be a like a $30-50 less upgrade version if you have 2K.
