How much are cell phones and plans in europe?

Ok I'm calling on all europeans for this one.

I need to know what the average price for a phone is in europe (italy if we can get real specific) preferably one that is tri band and unlocked. I also need to know what the average price per minute is and how plans are normally sold, ie month to month with a certain amount of minutes or with contracts or is it pay as you go and if it is what's the per minute rate? Also what would be the cost to call back to america?

Any info would be helpful.

look for prices on the websites (most have English versions)

In general cell phones are pretty cheap in Europe (with special promotions you can sometimes pick up a new unlucked one as cheap as $50 - 60$)

Every operator has probably 10 different plans with different options where you can choose from (going from prepaid cards to plans with cheaper international calls). In general international calls with a cell phone are pretty expensive so you are better of with a calling card (fixed line) if you plan to call back alot to the US.

All operator in Europe use the GSM standard so roaming is no problem.

Coverage is normally good and SMS (text msg) works way better then in the US (the last time I tried it in the US it was totally unreliable).

You also have 3G (UMTS) in Italy and things like GPRS (mobile internet) and MMS (sending pics) are pretty widespread. (especially in Italy where everyone and his dog has a cell phone)

Those sites were really hard to navigate but thanks.

It looks like prepaid calls to america might be around 50 cents per minute does that sound about right?

I agree, they should punish the guy who made the design by forcing him to surf the damn sites 36 hours straight 😉

anyway I found some rates from Telecom Italia linky

like I said, the rates depend heavily on which plan you choose
