Well, at any given time there are 5 consoles that can be bought, each normally over $200. Then they all have their own exclusive use, software and peripherals. There are well over 5 DVD players on the market at one time, however they all play universal DVDs. Any DVD can be played in any DVD player. Most decent movies make all their money in the movie theater, even if they break even, once merchandise and videos come out, then the money starts rolling in. Most VHS of new releases are $20, and many DVDs when they first come out carry sell for around $30. Still, most sell for $20 and you know production costs of the actual DVDs is minimal. There's also store markups and such, but lets leave that out for argument sake.
The one thing that I never understood was advertising. Advertisers pay movies for product placement. This has been debated for the Video Game industry for years and people always protested that they didn't want to stare at commercials on their screens. Only recently have we come across brand names scattered into some games. The funny part is, I run a Baseball Gaming as well as know of many other sites that are established to simply put Advertisements in games. People modify stadium ads to display Budweiser and Coke and uniforms to show that Nike or Reebok logo. If the game companies would only give in to advertising, maybe games would be much cheaper, or atleast better since now you have another million dollars or so that you can put back into your game development.
