How many years do you all think it will take the Radeon 9700 pro and the NV30 to drop to $50 or less? Curious.

They will be discontinued before they sell below $100.
If it ever gets to $50 it would be in a clearance section and not part of a current product line.

Well considering the R8500 line started at around $300 and now sells easily for the $120 mark (and ATI is famous for dropping prices after 6 weeks on the market) I would say the new Radeon will be budget priced in 8 months. Because after that they are going to be launching there next line of cards. ATI is on a 12 month (or abouts) rotation and N(we suck all your money out)Vidia is on an agressive 6 month rotation.... I would say that you will never see the 4600 below $150 unless it is refurbed. I would say you will be able to pick up a 4400 in the $120 range before long and the 4200 should be below $100 also. Going on dealer pricing today I can get a 64MB 4200 for just over $130 and the 128MB for just over $140. So I would expect these to drop out in the next few months. Both Nvidia and ATI like the Christmas time sales, and the Geforce4 line has not seen the major holiday season yet (and may not if they release soon), and the Radeon 8500 has already seen 1 holiday season. Also on that note with the Radeon ATI does not discontinue there last line of cards for at least two generations, so right now the older radeon's can be had in the $50 price range easily. When the new line comes out they will discontinue the first Radeon's.

Never.

We might see dirivatives of the Radeon 9700Pro/NV30 at $50 or less, but the high end board of the line will likely be discontinued when it hits around $80-200.
Too many potential variabled to give an more then the vaugest guess as to the lowest price it will see before it drops out of mainstream availability.

When they become $50 or less, you won't want one, they'll barely run any games at the time, and many would probably be willing to just give them to you.

It's amusing to think just how incredibly pathetic everything about the NV30/R300 will likely appear in 3yrs or so.

Then again, 3 years is bordering ancient history in PC terms. 4 years may as well be the domain of archaeology.

I think woodcomp is right on the money. Let some other fool waste his money on being an "early adopter." The cards that are out there right now in the $50-120 range can run all current games well. If that becomes a problem in 6 months or a year, upgrade then.

I think they'll never hit $50 maybe $60 after that they'll gain in price coz they'll become collector's items.

Try an E*ay sale in 2004, then they will be 50 buks....

I'm a lot more concerned about how the 9700 & NV30 will drive all the current card prices down....

Now that is a lot more interesting to me. :D

The ideal buying price point in my opinion is about $120 - $150. I've been kind of breaking that rule lately though. Spent $199 last November for a "top of the line" Leadtek GF3 TI-200. It's now worth maybe $70. Gave it to my wife. Spent $229 yesterday for an Asus GF3 TI4600.

Hmm lets see here now.
Voodoo Rush - Paid $200ish new, worth $5 at best today
Voodoo Banshee - Paid $100? new maybe, worth $5 today
TNT1 - Paid $150 new, worth $8 today
TNT2 - Paid $130 new, worth $9 today
Voodoo 3 3000 32mb - Paid $120 used, worth $20 today
Geforce1 sdr 32mb - Paid $150 used, worth $25 today
Geforce2 32mb ddr - Paid $135 new, worth $45 today
Radeon 7000 32mb ddr - Paid $40 new, worth $30 today
Geforce3 Ti200 - 64mb ddr - Paid $199 new, worth $70 today

Based on this it will be about 2 years from release...

If you really have a 32MB Voodoo 3 (all of which were 16mb cards as far as I know) then yours is worth a lot more than $20 to collectors ;):D
