First post /thread. Hi,
I am looking to get to point where I am comfortable with , say 30% of my PC operating features and potential. that's all. It is a huge capacity and all I do is e-mail , web forum, searches and investigation of topic of interest. NO gaming , no programing, AND Unfortunately 50% of my time is in defending system from my own incompetence and the outer vius, hijack and spyware threats
I seek help with files in general , as alot of freeware downloading is in order to set up machine, with e-mail filter ,AVG, addressbook filling aid, choosing which e-mail program to use OE or Eudora , , screen resolution auto adjust to source programs and ....hey you know how much is out there to assess.
I seek advice on a complimentary package/selection of effective important relatively easy to learn/use and "trick" programs for general user needs and support. If you have been there and done that , you know already which stuff is reviewed well and works - Like Toni ARTS -EASY CLEANER , great effective easy to use freeware. so as I set up AGAIN, after hijacking virus and all soirts of mis-understood computer behavior - I would like to try to do it right , Right From the Start---.How to handle the set up process, what is Java, HTMl .da da da da ?

So RIGHT -NOW - now I need to understand Zip files , that FRUSTRATING "Open With" box and have become bogged down and confused by the complexity of different configurations of zip files , as I am unable to even open some zip back up material THAT I GENERATED. let alone stuff from web freeware . If you could tutor, link or dialog with me for a short period to "cut to the quick" I would be extremely fortunate. thanks for your time. Mark

so, RAR is one of several types of zip software

my guess - zip files are NOT interchangable with opening , displaying
there is no universal sytem. I have zips that I cannot open right now .
I need to understand ZIP BASICS to control configuration. / opening

DeadAim is a e-mail software for AOL ONLY , Right?

All zip files (named *.zip) should be possible to open with the windows builtin zip. Don't even bother with winrar until you understand the stuff that windows comes with. If you want help, you can send me an instant message or something (see my profile for info).

DeadAim is an extension to AOL Instant Messenger that adds some nice features.

don't get mad , just the facts , just the nightmarish facts

Thanks for the responce . I see you have some 5000 posts on this site !

1. As you can tell from my initial post - I want to set up shop - correctly once and learn some basics . long time users could rattle off a list of good suuport software and put together a list to round out my OS operations and defense.

2. a short term tutor would be a great help - someone to act with contiunuity as I cover the initial setup hurdle - granted a very generous offering if found.! It seems to make the most sense to begin this with a seasoned computer user.

3.. The zip file situation in question began / proceeded like this . I crashed as a responce to extensive manipulation of my register and partitions - in attempt to trace the source of a hijacking program. I have re-formatted and fresh installed w2k. I was unloading and installing AVG anti-virus freeware version, became aware something was wrong with the update /upgrade ammendments . there is no access to these for some reason , so you cannot bring it to current coverage. ( see http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win2000/n1070245482

AVG has a problem and causes this error message to appear ,
Driver (core) not found winerr=2
PLUS numerous other side effects , numerous posts on the issue , in several forums
. AVG is UNsupported for the free version , . No one has defined what the problem
is and how to clear it up . Do you know ? or know how to find out ? )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

also in last few days it has not been updating when you try to bring up to the latest .

avg6550fu_free.exe download version 6.

Any way I could not open the desktop download to install, as an error message showed up- "setup.dll missing"-- ( right after a fresh install of w2k EVEN!) , so I seek "setup.dll" on google and get Where I also got diverted to download WinZip- small sidetrack -but there I saw a page about "associations , allowing download to familiarize itself w/ existing zip files on my system. I end up trying to open winzip to help in the install of AVG , remember - the goal , install AVG )
so I am stopped from opening ther winzip file as I am asked for a password I never even recall subitting. ADDITIONALLY , the whole issue of how to deal with zip files that change their icon if you attempt to open them with the wrong program in the "DREADED ""OPEN WITH"" BOX" a whole 'nother subtopic !!

One other side wrinkle in trying to go back trace my steps in the hope of getting around the Password requirement I went back to yhe "setup.dll" web site to try afgian to get Winzip download winzip and install winzip so that i can use wuin Zip to install AVG anti virus , (like the house that Jack built) AND AND I get this
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Server Error 403

No valid referer.

Possible sollutions:
Make sure you tried to access the file from www.dll-files.com
Disable any Download Accelerators such as "Download accelerator", "Getright" and "Gozilla" you may be using.
Disable any REFERER-blocker such as AdSubstract.
DO NOT RIGHT CLICK and choose "save target as".
Disable security programs such as "Norton Internet security". (Not recommended, but could be a solution in some ocations)
Then go back and try again!

contact webmaster@dll-files.com for more info
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

also I was not allowed to open winzip in one attempt approach because the winzip help file was not found in the same folder .
1. no password
2 no help file
I am at this point effectively blocked from proceeding so I go to attempt - I look to the winzip help file page .......

WinZip's® Install feature makes it easy to install software distributed in archives. The Install feature is available if an archive contains an ?install? or ?setup? program, a desktop theme, or a screen saver. This help topic describes the software installer. The Desktop Theme Installer and the Screen Saver Installer operate in a slightly different way and have their own help topics.
The software Install feature performs these functions:

1. extracts all the files to a temporary folder
2. runs the Setup program
3. deletes the temporary installation folder and files

The Install Dialog Box:

Click the Install button on the toolbar or select Install from the Actions menu command to open the Install dialog box.

Use the Minimize during install checkbox to control whether WinZip will be minimized while running the install program.

Press the OK button to begin the installation.

Notes:

Self-extracting Windows archives are treated as a special case. If you have opened a self-extracting Windows archive, the Install feature will simply run the self-extractor instead of extracting all the files to a temporary folder, running the setup program, and deleting the temporary installation folder and files.

If the Install button is not displayed, but you recognize an installable file, you can use the CheckOut Feature to try to install the software in the archive.

.here is yet one more obstacle ...

Message WZ40

The Zip file cannot be opened. If this Zip file is part of a multiple-disk set, please insert the last disk of the set and try again (this is required by the standard Zip multi-disk format). You may subsequently be prompted to insert other disks from the set.
If you downloaded this file, the most likely cause of this problem is a bad download. The best solution is almost always to download the file again. If this does not solve the problem, see the web page http://www.winzip.com/downprob.htm for hints on resolving download problems.

If you did not download this file, and it is not part of a multiple-disk set, it is either not a valid Zip file or it is corrupt, perhaps because of a bad diskette.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

so I still need setup.dll - even though I just installed w2k freshly this morning.
how much pain is too much? all to install a defensive anti-virus program , amazing .
if you read all this I am impressed , you are about as stubborn to get after the problem as me . thanks so much

I'm sorry this is causing so many difficulties for you. I'm not sure why you're interested in the setup.dll, I'd just install a fresh winzip.

1) Attempt to remove any current installations of AVG and winzip. Usually in the start menu, inside the program folders, there is a link to uninstall the program. If that fails, the Control Panel has an option to Add/Remove Software. Use that. Let us know if there are any errors in removing said software. (Note, you'll probably want to copy your AVG serial number, so you don't have to re-register in the next couple of steps).

2) Download fresh copies of the programs. Winzip: http://www.winzip.com/ : down load the evaluation version of the software. Make sure it's winzip81.exe. Also, download AVG again: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php .

3) Install winzip and AVG.

4) Report back to us.

You said you were looking for utlities - I think you're on the right track with AVG and winzip. If AVG doens't work out, you can try out Computer Associates free for a while, it includes a firewall.

Java is another language you can interact with. Most [some] programs, when written, are compiled into byte code - which makes it very specific to the kind of machine it's on. For example, you can't run a Mac program on a Sparc workstation, Windows on Unix, etc [without some additional software]. Java introduces a Virtual Machine ... long story short, most computer have the VM installed, so any Java code written on any machine can run on any machine.

If the uninstall of the software fails, then you have some other options. You can delete the folders of the progarm, and hunt down the the registry keys (NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART).

This is where your copy of ToniArts Easy Cleaner will come in handy for you.

I just updated my AVG install this very minute so the problem must lie with your installation.

If you are new to WinZip, run it using the Wizard interface. It will unzip compressed download files and file them in C:\Unzipped. To install an unzipped program, just open the folder and double click the Setup or exe file.

Present day viruses like to interfere with and disable AV programs. It is quite possible that this is part of your problem. Try a free online scan from
Panda Software. It not only scans but removes any virus that it finds and attempts to repair the damage caused.
Nowadays you can pick up a virus just by being online for 15 secomds without a firewall. Some free firewalls:
Free ZoneAlarm

Outpost

The previous suggestion of Computer Associates is also a very good one.
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm?

Outpost may be the easiest to configure. You can just run it the way it sets itself up.
