How many Watts Needed on Power Supply PS

I am currently running the following.

60gb 7200RPM HD WD
80gb 5400RPM HD Maxtor
120gb 7200RPM HD Maxtor
180gb 7200RPM HD WD
32X CDRW Cendyne
ATI AIW Radeon Video Card
Promise IDE controller
IEEE 1394 PCI
Soundblaster Live 5.1 PLatinum w/ Live Drive
3 Fans
Neon Light
300W PS

I want to add my new Cendyne DVD-R/RW drive to this mix...however, I recently had 5 HDs hooked up to this computer instead of the 4 listed above and when i loaded a dvd in while running a cd burn, i BLEW UP the 320W power supply I had. Basically, I jsut want to know if i need to buy another PS before adding in the DVD-R/RW drive. I have no idea how much each device would consume etc. If 300W is enough (b/c I have one less HD now) please let me know...if not, can someone let me know how many watts i would need? Thanks again

All values approximate (but close)

82w - athlon xp1700
55w - 768mb DDR 2100
25w - epox 8kha+ mobo
25w - 60gb 7200RPM HD WD
25w - 80gb 5400RPM HD Maxtor
25w - 120gb 7200RPM HD Maxtor
25w - 180gb 7200RPM HD WD
15w - 32X CDRW Cendyne
10w - ATI AIW Radeon Video Card
10w - Promise IDE controller
8w - IEEE 1394 PCI
5w - Soundblaster Live 5.1 PLatinum w/ Live Drive
9w - 3 Fans
3w - Neon Light
294w Total

A DVD drive will add another 20-25w to the total.

PC Manufacturers generally use a formula of CPU power + 80% of the components

82 + 169 (80% of 212w) = 251w

To close for a 300w PSU in my opinion

hmmm...seems like it...thanks for your info. It did work fine with 5 HDs and one CDRW though with the 320....but it blew when i added the dvd-rom. Now i only have 300W with 4 HDs a CDRW and trying to add the DVD-R/RW....guess i gotta go searchin for a new PS. Any suggestions for a cheap 400W PS?

BTW, would it hurt to try the 300 or would I immediatlely fry my PS by trying it out?

Trying a PS that you don't think will work could not only fry the PS, but could also fry your mobo/CPU/vid card, etc. I would recommend against it. Some PS have built in protection cicruits, but I would not test them myself... Directron sells some nice cases.
I believe a rebadged thermaltake?
newegg also sells a number of options, with which YMMV. If you can afford a little more, most people recommend it. I usually go middle of the road, and I have rarely been burned.

Qtec do a range of dual fan power supplies, I think they do 350W, 400W, 450W & 550W and all are very cost effective, I have the 350W model with my XP 1800+ and it runs fine.

Trying a PS that you don't think will work could not only fry the PS, but could also fry your mobo/CPU/vid card, etc.

Would you be able to explain to me how it could to do this?

I would stick with the tried and proven psus like Antec, Sparkle, Enermax or PC Power & Cooling especially when you have so many peripherials in your machine.

Look at an Antec truepower 330Watt or 380Watt minimum for your system. If you want more, you can always get a 430watt but you shouldn't need more than that and it will cost around $70.

I'm basically broke after buying a 19" LCD 1900FP from dell on the recent deal...so I can't spend that much on a PS. I ended up buying this one with free shipping for $19.99. Any thoughts? I've already purchased this one, so I hope its decent
