Which of the versions in the following link should I get so I can play the "latest and coolest" version of half life? I know a lot of the mods and stuff are free...is counterstrike? I know CS 1.0 is available for a free download.

Which one?!

It looks like a sweet game! :)

From what I understand, there are only two versions. You'll want the GameOfTheYear edition. Opposing Force can only be installed if you have the GOTY edition.

Don't get CounterStrike. It sucks ass. Just play the TeamFortressClassic 1.5 --now THAT rocks.

Is TFC a free add on mod?

Is that the one most people like/play?

Thanks! :)

FFMCobalt,

hate to break it to ya, but more people play CStrike than ANY other of the mods combined. ;)

Let him make up his own mind.

Opposing Force is an expansion pack. Game of the Year is vanilla half-life with TFC bundled. You'd probably have to upgrade to the latest version of TFC off the net regardless.

Soon there will be a CStrike only game. You can either wait for that or get Half-Life and download CStrike.

Edit: Zeeliv, oops that's what I meant. Thanks :)

Opposing Forces CAN be installed with the regular old (non-game of the year version) too.

You want the game of the year edition, or the platinum edition. The difference between the two being that with GOTY you have to download a big patch and then whatever mods you want, and with the platinum you'll it'll come patched and include all the biggest mods, and the expansion pack.

So with one you are paying less ($30), downloading a bunch of things, and just getting the original as far as single player goes.

With the other you are paying more ($65), not downloading anything except maybe a tiny patch or two, and getting original HL single player (won many many many awards), OpFor single player and multiplayer, as well as a few training missions that don't normally come with the mods.

EDIT: Balt, add in Q3 and UT to that total and CS still far exceeds it with number of players :)

Question is...would you rather pay an extra $35 or just download a patch? You're going to have to download patches anyway, updates come out a lot faster than new boxed versions come out. Buy the plain old, cheapest you can get version.

I have cable and I'm not worried about downloading patches. ;)

So I should buy HL GOTY Edition and download CS 1.0 and patch TFC and basic HL?

Thanks.

What if I bought Half-Life: Initial Encounter and just downloaded all the patches as well as TFC and CS 1.0? I know CS 1.0 is available for download, is TFC? Or is TFC a "buy only" mod?

Thanks. :)

save yourself the money and buy the first version that came out. Not the GOTY or Platinum, because those just include free patches that you can download. It's like 70 megs, but most people have DSL, Cble, etc., or can just set up a download overnight on a modem.

TFC was changed to TF1.5 a few patches ago. It is made by Valve, the people who made Half-life so when you patch Half-Life you patch TF.

I'm not sure about IE, it's basically a demo of the single player coupled with TFC. I don't know if it can be patched up to match the newest versions or if mods can run off of it. I don't think anyone should miss out on the full single player version of half-life anyway though, it's really great.

EDIT: konichiwa, what are you talking about?! You just recommended the same thing I did.
EDIT2: Krodge, they don't even make the original version anymore, and GOTY edition does not come at a price premium.

No way Zeeliv, not if you're on Broadband like Zippy is.

Buy VANILLA halflife. GOTY edition:

Amazon.com - $29.99 plus shipping
Buy.com - $28.09 plus shipping
Outpost.com - $34.95 with *FREE OVERNIGHT* shipping <-- best deal IMO

Then go download:

CounterStrike 1.0 FULL INSTALL
Half-Life newest Patch (make sure you get the RIGHT patch for your version

And have fun. The latest half-life patch will install TFC 1.5 if you want it, but in my opinion CounterStrike is much better. (Although I haven't played CS 1.0 yet)

No, you recommended the Platinum version. I recommended the vanilla one (or at least the most vanilla they sell anymore, which is GOTY edition)

I said either, he hadn't said if he had broadband or if he was interested in the exp pack (which is pretty good) yet. I wasn't trying to make the GOTY look bad, just stating the facts. It is afterall half as much, and would be what I'd buy if I didn't already have the original.
