How many 'units' could this machine crunch?

Ok, I cannot ignore this RC5 stuff I see every time I visit this site anymore. I am not familiar with RC5 cracking at all, but it seems like a lot of people are having a good time with it. My basic question is: How well does RC5 scale? How good would RC5 run on a machine with the following specs:

8 Xeon 550 processors (might be 600's)
7.5 Gigs o' Ram

Bronco,

It scales 100%. In other words, it would crack as much on an 8 proc machine as it would on 8 individual machines.😀 You'd be at about 4K blocks a day if 550Mhz.

EDIT: Damn young guys and their speedy fingers!🙂

Hey, I don't type that slow. There were no replies when I started.

Bronko,You might want to consider an running an instance or two of SETI on that machine as well as RC5. How much cache do those Xeons have?

Oh my! Those would do pretty good in Seti. You could consider sacrificing a couple of em for Seti.

Have you joined RC5 for TA?

Holy....
To give you an idea about the output of that thing, it would be equivalent to my (ex)work herd that consisted of ~13 machines averaging 350mhz each. It's like a whole network of power in one box 🙂

yah the xeon's are pretty fast.

i added a duron 950 and my 4-xeon-550 box yesterday and my KKey's went from 550/sec to 4639/sec

(my duron isnt always rc5'ing either)

Wow. Looked on Pricewatch for 2MB cache Xeon's. I suppose for a mission critical server, it's no problem, but those are some pricey processors. Cheapest I saw were around $1500 and they probably wouldn't work 8-way. The ones saying 4-way were in the $2000 and $3000 range. yikes.
