This is either some huge struck of bad luck or Sony's quality control is just below average now.

All incidents have happened within the first year of purchase and all items have been very well treated.

I had gotten a Minidisk player that started to malfunction by incorrectly reading which buttons were pressed.
My girlfriend bought a CD player that started to malfunction by reproducing incorrect sounds.
My alarm clock's alarm doesn't work anymore for some reason.
3 backstyle headphones have failed on me in the same manner. Although each one did last for about a year.
My PS2 fan is much louder than others, although it could have been because of shipping, but seems unlikely.

And I think there was at least another product that I bought that malfunctioned, but I can't remember.

Any of you have these kind of problems?

My N505 still works after a good battering, so does the Micro Hi-Fi after a few stabs (dont ask about that one) , the TV and the radio. Might be a USA thing.

Sony's consumer electronics have gone down the toilet in quality...
Their stuff from about 5-6 years back still works pretty well, though.

I usually make my Sony purchases in Japan - for some reason, the stuff there seems to have a reduced failure rate.

No way.

- Products. Overpriced, low quality - planned obsolescence. They break within a year or two of purchase for the most part, and give lots of trouble till then. Of course every company will have its lemons, but I've dealt with this three or four times (gave them the benefit of the doubt at first). Their PC games are also of low quality, being notoriously buggy - moreso than most beta software.

- Unethical business practices, including nonexistence of customer service. I've seen them ruin their MMORPG, EverQuest, firsthand. They have "accidentally" charged most players twice for the same month in the past, then done nothing about it, leaving it up to the victims to call their CC companies and stop payment. Many of these then had their accounts suspended for payment due (the second payment). They've more than trebled expansion production for the game, putting one out every few months. With such a hectic schedule and a young & overworked staff, the expansions are terrible. They then spam you not only every time you log in, but also in-game (the EverQuest staff of old wouldn't interrupt online play with any advertisements, as they realized immersion in the game was key to its success). If you accidentally click "pre-order" instead of "later" when receiving the login nag screen (which is easy to do since they put the pre-order button in the same spot as the "accept end-user license agreement button', which you have to click every time you log on, going so far as to even make the background look similar), your credit card is automatically charged, and it's a nonrefundable purchase. A few expansions back it was refundable, and the webpage to cancel your preorder mysteriously didn't work for weeks at a time while the rest of their site worked flawlessly  These changes have attracted many "l33t k1dz" to EQ, while retaining only the already-playing children, addicts, and idiots.

Most companies will screw you for a buck. What distinguishes Sony is that they do it for free. Judging by how they've handled their MMORPGs, they may even be willing to pay to screw their customers, an example being how the changes to EverQuest have driven away more players than they have attracted (although this may just be stupidity).

I feel the same way as I have boombox that's about 8 years old work wonderfully. Everything else new from Sony sucks. I blame their entry into the video game market as that's where 80% of their profit comes in.

There are some things that I like and some things I don't. I don't think all their products are going to break easily but I do think you pay a lot for their name. I have a Sony RPTV, 27" trin. and a PS2 that's about it.

The Playstation II will only last for 2 years (ironic) but everything else they produce usually meets my standards. I have a Sony HiFi mini-component stereo system and it's one of the best electronic investments I've made. Still pounding out some nice wall-shaking tunes for over 3 years. Still no distortion on max volume (which is extremely loud).

All the other Sony products I've had are

if i have enought money in my pocket it i always dip it in sony's bucket... so far everything works solidly ... (wega tv, vcr, camcorder etc...) one thing i have noticed though is that if its not made in malaysia or japan, the QUALITY WILL SUCKS>.. usa has crappy quality control in factories prob (damn stupid workers). the reason sony pc's suck nowis that they dont update their software/bios.... their proprietary software just suck because of only one reason: NO UPDATES>.. the pc's are well designed but nonetheless.. their customer support sucks

for ex: i owned a sony clie nx70 that got broken while i dropped it on the floor.. sent it in to sony repair and charging me $330 to fix some hinges and replace the outside cover... I COULD OF BOUGHT THE POS FOR $399 brand new at best buy(online prob even cheaper! ) i have also heard quite alot more stories where there are malfunctions on clie (sent in with no physical damages of any sort) and the service reps caused a problem on purpose just so it would not be covered under warranty !!!!

sony tv's/consumer electronics... very proprietary... now recently sony tv engineers have caught the wave to include latest gen. tech in their wega tv's but a yr ago sony always use to put limited features or just sony invented tech. ( i.e firewire, dvi input/output, 3 lens system in projectection etc)

sony audio reciever is still lagging to include latest bits and bytes into their products (thx.. dts 6.1es...)

and you can just forget servicing your consumer electronics... here in houston i doubt there is stilll a sony service center left... they dont have a good management system where you can check status, call to complain, gauranteed repair etc like panasonic, onkyo, denon would offer. sony service website is sometimes not updated .

CLIFF NOTES:
+TRUST THE SONY PRODUCTSTHAT ARE BUILT IN JAPAN/MALAYSIA (Clie, camcorder, xbr tv's, some plasma's)
+SONY TV's/dvd players are now getting better (technology wise, and quality)

-FORGET ABOUT SONY SOFTWARE on sony pc's, clie pda or camcorder.. cuz they dont make updates to fix BUGS or issues
-CANNOT NOT TRUST USA/CHINA BUILT PRODUCTS, i dont (quality control sucks)
-Sony Home audio products are CRAP (recievers, speakers and car speakers)
-FORGET ABOUT SONY REPAIR, can be unreliable
-Sony service website is not always up to date

I don't equate Sony with quality.

1. Well-known PS2 problem
2. When my Sony DVD changer stopped working after a year and 2 months (1 year warranty), I did an Internet search for the error I was getting. It turned out it was a well known error that occurred in at least a half-dozen models, and a large percentage of the players died after about 18 months. Despite knowing about the problem, Sony chose not to correct it and kept producing the defective DVD players. Why? Why not? They didn't have to fix the players under warranty, so why bother correcting the defect?

I will never buy another Sony product again.

most of their audio product is pure crap. 99% rule seems to work well here, maybe even 99.9% while at that. i love my cd3000 and FD trinitrons however :)

My Sony D-EJ01 Walkman is working flawlessly. Pretty good considering that its nearly 5 years old.

My 27" Wega hasn't given me any problems.

Better than crap at the dollar store? Sure. High quality? No. Frankly, though, I don't think there are any consumer level manufacturers that are of excellent quality in the sony price range, which is kind of sad. Once you move up to more expensive sony products you're probably bettery off going with another brand.

:)

I too have had excellent success w/ Sony products, from my PS1 to my current DVD player. Oh, and IMO they made solid all-in-one remotes, I've dropped my remote commander on my hardwood floor too many times to count and it still works flawlessly :)

MD/CD/DVD players i own from sony are all made in japan and none of them have given me any problems...

i woudlnt think this is because they are Sony products but rather because they are the medium-higher end products made from an electronics manufacturer that also produces less expensive/lower quality products...you should always buy things on a case-by-case basis rather than buying the brand anyways.

lets see:

E55... works
MDR-888LP... works and sounds excellent
street headphones... durable as hell
PS2... just played it
rechargable batteries and charger... works like a charm
T610... battery cover is not tight but... works fine and looks sleek
old discman's... think they still work?

that is about all. i've only had a walkman died on me and a pair of MDR-888 with loose cabling and that went out too. oh well i was a kid back then...

high quality sony products that are made in japan seem fine to me...

Most Sony stuff are still good, especially the ones made in Japan.
Of course, only high end sony stuff are still made in Japan.
The cheaper, economy products are either made in china or other asia countries.

Nothing wrong with made in china stuff, but Made in japan stuff tend to have better quality consistance.
