Hi, I'm just trying to write a paper right now and everywhere I go there seems to be wildly different estimates as to how many troops are in Iraq. Could anyone get me a good number?

There are no hard/fast numbers.

Much depends on how things are counted and who is doing the counting.

Current or near-current counts:

US: About 140,000
United Kingdom: About 7200
South Korea: About 2300
Australia: About 1500

Plus dribs and drabs from other countries:

Nowhere close to enough to prevent sectarian violence and a coming all out civil war.

And after nearly four years of the Iraqi version of the Katrina treatment---time is rapidly running out.
As usual, GWB&co. is more than a day late and a dollar short.

But to borrow a phrase from Vietnam, there are some that always see light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm curious as to how many more are in the region (Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, navy forces in the Gulf area, etc) providing support. 25,000 - 30,000?
