How many times to air dry cotton clothes before I can use heat without shrinking?

I'm fed up with ruining my clothes by forgetting that they're cotton and drying them on high heat and shrinking them.

How many times do you have to just hang dry a cotton shirt before you can use a dryer without shrinking it?

I just wash cold and dry on medium heat. Bit of shrinkage the first time, but not very noticeable and none after that.

Pretty much what I do as well.

I've been wondering... is there usually an issue with washing a "warm water" clothing item on cold? I recall hearing that the reverse is not good.

Stuff I'm worried about shrinking never goes in the dryer. Air dry, always.
