How Many Times Have You Removed Your Heatsink?

I am having to remove the heatsink now for the 3rd time from my Athlon XP1800+ due to motherboard changes & other lame reasons. Each time I do it, I'm having to clean the heck out of the CPU (specifically the core) and the heatsink to get the old thermal material off. Is this safe to keep doing? How many times have you guys done this? Am I degrading the CPU performance or hurting the CPU by continuing to do this?

Thanks!

I've done the same thing and I wouldn't worry about it.
I upgraded heat sinks twice now, but I should be done now after putting on an AX-7. :D
But I literally had the screwdriver slip at least a dozen times and hit my K7S5A when trying to put on that beast. :Q Fortunately it still works just fine. I guess that board isn't so fragile after all or I'm just VERY lucky.

Must I count the times?

And actually you increase cooling performance if you clean properly and apply new thermal goop.

About a dozen times on both of my systems. I've only cracked the core of one CPU, my faithfull 633MHz Celeron which could overclock almost to 1100MHz's.

Im with the above guy....many times....heh, the last time I removed my heatsink and cleaned my CPU I noticed the core was chipped.

Oh turds (had to edit my adult vocabulary, i guess it really is all foofy in here like I had heard) I said, I hope that didn't JUST happen.

I just crossed my fingers, said a little prayer and re-installed my CPU/Heatsink/Fan and booted. Lo and behold it posts and boots just fine.
Whew, that was a close call.

Anyone else out there running just fine with chipped CPU's? I know there were MANY stories of peeps chipping them to destruction, but I was wondering how many are chipped yet work.....heh

(funny how when I sent this in the first time it told my to hit back on my browser, remove the potty mouth language, and re-submit. Yet when I do it says I can't re-post....I wonder how a smart, logical and wise guy like Anand ever let his site get to this point. Proof positive you should never allow the masses to take over...very sloppy)

In my entire life? Perhaps more than 100 times

To this specific XP chip? Twice.
