How many times have you reinstalled vista?

I'm on my 3rd install which was another clean with a reformat because of vista turning stupid. The last time I couldn't access my hd because vista locked during bootup and when I tried to restart it I couldn't. I also tried using the dvd tools to restore it but it didn't see a vista install on my hd. My son is also having trouble now after the last few updates and ms acknowledges that there's a problem with installs invalidating themselves but doesn't have an answer. They tried to sell him a new key which he promptly declined since he's already got a valid key. MS is really pissing me off and I was wondering just how many other people are having the same problem.

I have quite a few customers return their new PC's due to Vista fvcking up...usually a botched program install or update install that has screwed things up.

I have found it quite common to have to do several reinstalls of vista just when trying to get drivers working for different hardware before even thinking about activating it....but then again it isn't much different to when Windows XP first came out....now that OS was a piece of junk when it was first released.

Still on my first install since Jan,my Vista is very solid.

I take a few precautions like only installing software that I know will be compatible with Vista,if you are worried about problems then make sure you have System Restore on and make backups, personally I leave System Restore off.

I would have to say Vista is a lot more solid then XP ever was after 6 weeks of release.

On my first install as well although I have not activated on fears that something may happen or that i might go back to XP. Overall running very solid.

Only a couple of issues: direct sound obviously since i have audigy. Also, the nvidia drivers are a bit flaky, for example, i change the gamma and brightness but they don't stay, keeps going back to defaults.

I have Vista running on and S754 unit (third PC) very stably using all onboard stuff besides a 7600GS. No OS reinstall. Probably so stable because of using onboard sound and a slightly older IDE HDD...EG no third party operation/drivers needed

haven't had to reinstall yet on my two home boxes + 1 work box.

Reinstalled more times than I can count during beta but that was simply for build refreshes. No problems requiring a reinstall.

testing since beta 1......lost count :). But its the best Windows I've ever tested, had only minor issues with installation. Looking forward for Windows Vienna :p . Can't wait to see Pie Menu- a start/context menu replacement.

Now i have Vista Ultimate retail, one time install- zero problems.

I have to agree and also question the overall computer knowledge of the people who are fvcking up their OS.

I would speculate hardware problems or user errors in most cases. I'm on my first install since the release for 3 machines.

My Ultimate Vista install had to be reinstalled. It had sporatic boot problems when installed on my SATA WD250gb. I reinstalled on a different HDD (ATA133 Maxtor 250gb) and it's been fine thus far discounting misc driver issues.

In fairness to Vista, I had this problem under WinXP using the same hardware so I suspect it's some sort of weird compatibility issue between the MB+SATAII interface+WD HDD.

I'm on my n-th install of XP :D

No compelling reason for me to upgrade, I may stick with my current XP/Ubuntu dual-boot.

I installed the Vista Business Upgrade version that came with my Action Pack subscription, so it's not like I'm out much in the way of money, but I'm rapidly beginning to dislike it! :frown:

Oh sure, the visual effects are great and it's very smooth, but the incompatibility with a number of different pieces of software and the myriad security issues are driving me to drink. For instance, one error I've got right now is "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0. Please contact your system administrator."

Hello?!? I am the system administrator! I'm logged in that way -- and there is no other user account on the machine. Grrr. :|

It's probably the result of some screwed up setting(s) from the (legal)XP Pro license that I upgraded from but that doesn't help me any now.

It also seems to be impossible to uninstall the AVG Anti-virus software, although the OS keeps telling me I've been successful every single time.

Have you tried installing Vista from scratch using compatible software? I believe AVG has a compatible antivirus already and there's Adobe 8. Although upgrading seems like an easier path, I think it's just too much work in the long run. When you tried to uninstall Adobe 7, was UAC disabled? Can you right-click on the "uninstall" link and select run as Administrator?

I installed it back in January, about a week before retail came out (OEM version for the record).

It has been rock solid. No complaints outside of a few buggy drivers, but those aren't show stoppers.

Much better than the 98 --> XP transition went IMHO.

I'm on my first install and I haven't had too many issues.
Most of the issues I've had were remedied by running a program as admin.

I've had to re-install only once, and that was only because one of my hard drives came DOA and I had to RMA it. Since I wanted to set up a striped raid, I naturally had to reinstall Vista to get that to work.
