For the last few years I've dropped my phone multiple times and its been rock sold. The past two weeks when I was drunk I "think" I dropped it and the bottom left is cracked. LoL. GN is due for an upgrade anyways.

LG Optimus Pro, one time. Fell off my desk yesterday, face down, on the concrete floor. Busted the touch screen, so I get to try to replace it. It still works fine, even the touch screen where it's busted. Other phones, I've dropped dozens of times and never had a problem.

I dropped my Lumia 920 on my foot once. I had no shoes on, and it did a lot of damage...to my foot. There's actually a small bruise on my foot where the corner of the phone hit.

My roommate dropped his Lumia 920 face-first onto asphalt once without damaging it. A friend of mine (who also has a Lumia 920) drops her phone several times per day - the body has a few dings near the top and bottom, but no issues with functionality. They wouldn't be visible if she wiped it down a little - the glossy polycarbonate on Lumias tends to look discolored if scuffed, but polishing it will restore the color completely.

I had an HTC Titan that I dropped not long after I purchased it in 2011 - the phone's shell was made of aluminum, so it was fairly rigid. Dropped it on a sidewalk, and it popped the back off. No damage to the screen, fortunately. The gun-metal paint on the back got scratched a little.

I've had several smart phones. I have dropped most of them probably a dozens of times each. My RAZR m and galaxy nexus I keep in my pocket while shooting basketballs at the gym. Some times I do a layup or something and the phone flies out. Maybe I've been lucky but I've never broken a phone once.

I think phones that are mostly plastic hold up a lot better. Had a thunderbolt before the nexus and when you drop it the case doesn't bounce back because its metal. Leaves a much more lasting mark or dents sometimes. So I go find a polycarbonate phone usually. HTC dream was unkillable for example. My new moto x I hope I don't drop much.

Also this is all without cases. I always get screen protector though

my old droid X was dropped many times, never cracked tho. lots of dings on the rim of it tho. had that sucker almost 3 years. the razr maxx i have now has been dropped like 5 times, usually short distance and on soft flooring. the one time it slid out of my truck, it hit gravel and cracked the screen. didnt hit that hard, just an unlucky angle i think. even separated the "irremovable" back. the IP4s fell 2 ft onto fiberglass grating and cracked the back glass. PoS. slid right off of a small table, solid on the table and wasnt nudged or even touched. ive never used cases, due to the motorola docks being fitted to the phone itself. the ip4s is only used for plants vs zombies 2. ive only had the razr maxx a bit over a year now, its been broken for 3 months but i still use it. the more moisture that gets inside the cracks the worse it works. if i talk for more than 10 minutes the speaker fades out, it gets very hot with use now and the battery barely lasts 16 hours.

Over the years many times. I uses protective cases tho. I try to brake the fall off my foot when possible. Worst fall was Optimus G 4ft corner shot to kitchen counter when it slipped out of my hand, but did no damage to it.

Pretty much every smartphone that I've owned, I've dropped at least once. Usually from hip-height to the carpet, concrete, tile or asphalt. I've never actually broken one - although one time I dropped an iPhone 3GS from about 2 meters onto tile (I had balanced it on the edge of a shower partition to listen to music and it fell when I opened the shower door), and I bent the headphone jack a bit. Another time I left my iPhone 4S on the roof of my car when I drove to work (it slid across the roof and got stuck on the rear windshield wiper). Yeah, I'm clumsy and I'm stupid... I know.

But I always use a case. I am obsessive about keeping my phones scratch proof, and I know that I'm clumsy (and occassionally stupid) and so I put a screen protector on and I keep a good cheap plastic Amazon case on them at all times.

I remember once, I was late for a plane at Denver Airport, was running with my jacket slung over my shoulder, turned the corner and my original 1st gen iPhone - which I paid full price for - flew out of my jacket pocket on my shoulder, flew through the air... and time slowed down and I watched it gracefully fly at shoulder height through the middle of terminal B at DIA.. and then it landed on the marble tile floor and slid about 7 meters feet before stopping. I walked over and picked it up and there was no damage at all, although the case was a little scuffed.

Caseless, no. But both my iPhone 4 in Otterbox Commuter and iPhone 5 in Tech21 with D3O material fell from lap when getting out of car on asphalt. No damage either time.

Have never dropped a phone, my roommate makes up for my lack of droppings by dropping his pretty much daily.

Note 2 dropped it once 6 inches to ground and destroyed the screen, got my S4 and put a Elemental case on it and dropped it several times and no issues, dropped IPhone 4 and 5s twice and just chipped the back cover.

A couple times.

For all of those who dropped their smartphone before without a case on, how badly was that phone damaged?

Not applicable - I have a case.

What phone was it and is it still usable?

iPhone 5. Yes

Are you still currently using that phone?

Yes.

I used my prior phone, iPhone 4, without a case (screen protectors front and back). I dropped it a couple times with zero damage.

Just remembered that I dropped my S3 into a full bath once. Saw it sink through the water and hit the bottom.

That's when I found out that my reflexes are better than I thought. Phone was actually fine after that. :)
