How many times have you dropped your smartphone?

For all of those who dropped their smartphone before without a case on, how badly was that phone damaged?

What phone was it and is it still usable?

Are you still currently using that phone?

DROID bionic, dropped 50 or more times... A bunch of times hard enough to make battery fly out. Works fine just some dings... I love Motorola.

Droid X: more times than I care to remember. Never a scratch on it, it was like the Abrams tank of smartphones.

SGS3: 3 or 4 times.

Note 2: never.

My SGS3: dropped twice. First time nothing happened. Second time screen went black unresponsive to touch.

(If anyone has any ideas as to how I might be able to fix it without spending $350 on a new screen like the Samsung person said, I'd love to hear it)

Take it apart and see if anything has jogged loose, if not replace the screen yourself for less than half that?

^ Sounds like you actually 86'd the LCD screen itself, not just the glass. I don't think there's any other way but to replace it.

But an SGS3 LCD/Digitizer shouldn't cost you some ridiculous $350. More like less than half that. Replacing the whole assembly isn't that hard (like just the glass is a much harder operation) so you shouldn't have to pay some exorbitant price to get someone else to do it.

The screen isn't cracked, I'm fairly sure it's a connection fault. The problem is, the connection is part of the screen...

And I live in New Zealand, so prices are a bit different to the US. Even so, a new S3 costs around $500, so it's a bit pointless replacing just the screen for so much. I still have my original SGS, and if I don't tax it too heavily it's actually not nearly as slow as I'd thought it would be. I'll probably end up waiting for Google's next Nexus phone or getting the HTC One.

No, nothing was loose that I could see, though I don't think it's possible to take out anything other than the motherboard, speakers, and lens complex.

If you're wondering, yes, I actually did take it apart.

On the left hand side of the motherboard, I think it's the second thingy up from the bottom that I/Os to the screen. But the connection was fine and everything.

Your photo doesn't show up, however if it is the screen thats borked you should still get a replacement for less than half what was stated earlier.

All the screens come from closer to you than the rest of us anyway.

Then again you need to make sure it is the screen.

Galaxy Nexus. I've dropped it a good 10 times maybe since I got it. With and without a case. There is some cosmetic damage but not enough to make it look like I rough housed it.

In my lifetime I've dropped my phones no more than 4-5 times. All but one of those times was always on carpet as I am slightly more careless with my phone when I'm on carpet. ;)

The other one time I intentionally tossed my OG Droid onto the seat of my car only to have it bounce off and fall on asphalt.

Smartphone never. Old Samsung flip phone from early 2001 I dropped in my coffee mug, my dogs water bowl and the toilet twice. Each time I took it apart and washed and it still works to this day. I dropped an iPhone 4S intentionally just to see it smash. It was lovely.

iP5 dropped dozens of times - couple of dings - no issues other than I'm sick of the phone and ready for a new one

HTC Incredible S - once onto a concrete garage floor, scuffed some paint off the metal rim. No other damage. Lots of times on a hardwood floor, no damage.

I dropped my iphone 4s 4 feet in to concrete. A couple tiny chips on the edge of the glass. They aren't noticible unless you are really looking for then. After that I decided to put a bumper case on.

My heart attack moment: I was shopping with my GNex, sans case, in the cart. There's a little spot near the handle made to hold lists/phones. I was listening to my phone via a Bluetooth headset while shopping. I loaded my groceries into my car, took the cart to the corral, and gave it a nice forceful shove from about 6 feet away and turned back to my car. The music stopped. I froze in horror when I realized what I had done.

I'm usually pretty gentle on my phone, hence, no case.

I slowly turned and saw my phone in (intact) pieces. Back cover, battery, and chassis. All about 6 feet apart from each other, screen face down. I pick up the pieces from the hard, unforgiving blacktop, waiting to see the screen last...

I lost a Dell Axim screen to my garage pavement, and it was in a case. I was severly bummed.

I finally turn the phone over to look at the screen, and it's not broken! *Whew* I put it back together, and it fires right up. No issues! There's a tiny chip in the lower left rear, where it took the hit. But it's barely noticeable. (So much for Samsung's "cheap plastic!")

I now have a case. :) I'm a lucky SOB, and I don't believe my luck would stretch any further.

I've dropped my S4 about five or six times. All those times I've had either an UAG or Otterbox case on it, so there is no damage at all.

iphone 4S. At least 30 times. A few times HARD. I have a rubberized but fairly thin case. Zero visible damage. 100% function.

I am almost 100% sure my new Android phone will not fair as well, so I will have to invest in a fairly bulky case.

oh my God, joke of the day.

iPhone 4S with the infamous fragile glass back. ;)

I find Motorola phones to be best when it comes to the drop test. I dropped the original Droid many times and that brick still survived. Some old Nokia dumbphones were also extremely resilient.

Dropped my Optimus G once, shattered the back glass.

Took it to BB, Geek Squad gave me a brand new one. Now I rock one of those silicone cases.
