How many switches can I cascade?

Nutz

I know the 5-4-3 rule doesn't apply for switching. So how many switches can you cascade in FastEthernet?

<< Spanning tree limits you to 7 switches. >>

Wait a minute....
If I turn off STP, then I should be able to chain switches TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!

Is there any literature or specifications stating 7 as the limit? None of my searches have been able to come up with anything on this.

Shhhh...don't tell anyone, but that's where spidey got the "07" for his nick...

Literature? Why do you need some pages on some web server that may or may not be true? I said...therefore it is.

🙂🙂🙂

here's a quote from cisco's site -
We already saw that an aggressive value for the max-age parameter and the forward-delay could lead to a very unstable STP. The loss of some BPDUs can then cause a loop to appear. Another issue, not very known, is related to the diameter of the bridged network. The conservative default values for the STP impose a maximum network diameter of seven. This means that two distinct bridges in the network should not be more than seven hops away the one to the other. Part of this restriction is coming from the age field BPDU carry: when a BPDU is propagated from the root bridge towards the leaves of the tree, the age field is incremented each time it goes though a bridge. Eventually, when the age field of a BPDU goes beyond max age, it is discarded. Typically, this will occur if the root is too far away from some bridges of the network. This issue will impact convergence of the spanning tree.

here's a GREAT link related to spanning-tree..

and now, a quote of my own...

Dr. Hill: The question is, 'Do I have a God complex?' which makes me wonder if this...lawyer...has any idea as to the kind of grades one has to receive in college to be accepted at a top medical school. If you have the vaguest clue as to how talented someone has to be to lead a surgical team. I have an M.D. from Harvard. I am board certified in cardio-thoracic medicine and trauma surgery. I have been awarded citations from seven different medical boards in New England, and I am never, ever, sick at sea. So I ask you, when someone goes in to that chapel and they fall on their knees and they pray to God that their wife doesn't miscarry, or that their daughter doesn't bleed to death, or that their mother doesn't suffer acute neural trauma from post-operative shock, who do you think they're praying to? You go ahead and read your Bible... Dennis, and you go to your church, and with any luck you might win the annual raffle, but if you're looking for God, He was in operating room number two on November 17th, and He doesn't like to be second guessed. You ask me if I have a God complex? Let me tell you something. I AM God.

There was supposed to be a smiley after that comment.

But generally when I post I will rarely post information that I'm not sure of. If I do it is always preceeded or postceeded by an "I think?"

cya

Sure you can tune spanning-trees parameters a little better to accomodate more switches, BUT if you have a switched network whose diameter approaches or passes 7 then you have serious design issues to deal with - not trying to tweak STP.

And you know that most of us already treat your word as gospel, so don't take the quote personally at all, O mighty spidey... 😉

I've just seen "Malice" about 5 times in the last month, because they're playing it incessantly on Showtime.
After your post, I couldn't resist posting my 2nd favorite Alec Baldwin movie moment.

Incidentally, my 1st favorite AB movie moment is his entire scene in "Glengarry, Glen Ross."
He absolutely STEALS that movie , much like R. Lee Ermey did in "Full Metal Jacket," but in much less screen time.

And I continue to hone MY skills as a world-class thread-jacker...obviously.
