How many situps per day would you recommend for a guy with a modest gut?

I want to get rid of my beer belly. Have already cut out beer and sodas.

How many situps per day should I work for? How many reps and how many situps per rep should I attempt? What would be optimal for getting rid of my stomach? Do I do as many situps as possible or would it be better to go until I get a little tired, take a break, and repeat?

Cliffs:
Which is better, as many situps as possible with few reps or a handful of situps with lots of 10-15 minute breaks?

You need to change your diet and do a little running or something. Situps will help tone a little bit. I do 100 situps every other night (at least I try to, sometimes I stop at 75. Even 50 if I am feeling lazy  )

Situps will make your muscles bigger and stronger. That will effectively increase the size of your gut. Cut back on how much you eat or do regular cardio. Spot reduction is a myth, you can't make only one part of your body "thinner", you have to do something like running or biking that will affect your whole body.

Do at least 100 situps 3x a day. You have to eat a lot of calorie-heavy foods to really work those abs and burn off the gut; I recommend fast food such as Burger King. Don't go for the salads either, they don't have the necessary nutrition - Whopper all the way. Whatever you do, don't jog. It's bad for the knees.

Ive heard time and time again that you cant spot reduce fat. i think cardio and weight lifting would be better, but I'll leave it to gym experts to suggest something.

Situps will work some of your abdominal muscles. If you want to lose weight, you will need to exercise the larger muscles groups.

Okay, so what is an example of a good cardio routine? Should I go until I'm about to drop or is it better to take lots of breaks?

Time to start googling.

I like interval training when done correctly.

I also recommend staying around 65-70% of your max HR for extended periods of time.

You need to lower your total body fat, just doing situps won't cut it. You can start with a better diet, and work in more exercise.
And with cardio workouts, it's better to keep your heart rate up, so I don't think lots of breaks is a good idea. <--- at least that's my understanding. I do cycling myself in which I never really stop, but will slow down after a particularly tough area.

Keep your heartrate in the range of 70-85% of your max heartrate, which is determined by 225 minus your age. 30 minutes 3 times a week at the very least. You can also try the HIIT method, which promises similar results in less time (google). Don't forget those Whoppers!

Get on one of those machines that estimate your calorie burn. Do it for an hour 6 days a week. I get 500 caloris burned on the elliptical, and 1000 on the stairmaster.
