How many sick days is it okay to take a year?

I've taken 3 sick days this year, 2 for doctors appointments, and 1 for being sick.

I still have a pretty mass amount of time built up though, so it got me thinking:

How many sick days can you really take without having problems / upsetting co-workers?

There are many days I've been sick but not really sick and I just come in any way, should I stay home then? I know I'm just spreading germs anyhow. I have a cold right now...and I'm contemplating taking one tomorrow, but I don't want to be viewed as a "Sick day over-user", even though I've accumulated like 70 hours of sick time this year..so I have more than enough left over at all times..

If you can't think for more than 20 minutes take a day off. I took 2 weeks off because I had a horrible flu cold mix back in November, never got any flack from anyone about it.

depends on the person really.

i had a guy worked for the company 5 years. never took a sick day. then he got really ill. was out 4 weeks and very few said anything.

had another guy who was there 2 years and took the max EVERY year (you got like 10 if you needed mroe needed doctor note). we fired him after 2 years

This is another "it depends" situation. Some companies have no fixed number of sick days and don't care (within reason) how many days someone takes. At the other end of the spectrum, some companies expect every hour missed to be made up. And some companies have a published sick day policy, but in reality they frown on people who use them.

Is it going to cause serious problems if you don't go in? Chances are if you have accumulated 70 hours of sick time, it will be OK.

I don't have anything scheduled for tommorow, so nothing super important will be missed. I guess I am once bit, twice shy, the place I worked at before here had a published policy, but they really kind of gave you the cold shoulder for being out. Here no one seems to mind it, and they very flexible schedule wise, so I think I might go for it.

I could come in, but I don't feel well, and I want to stay home and not feel well. =p

Use as many as you need. Nothing makes the co-workers any happier than you coming in sneezing snot and leaving a trail of viral infections on everything you touch.

I'm on salary so I don't have a designated number of sick days per year. I probably miss 1 day a year on average, some years I haven't taken any. I can get doctor and dentist appointments at 7 AM so I just go in later on those days.

I've never taken a sick day, the closest I got to it was when I over exerted myself playing softball(after a 5 year hiatus from the sport), my body was all sore but I pushed thru the pain.

My company doesn't offer sick days, we get personal days instead. I take as many as I feel like taking. If anyone says anything about it, I just say that it is "personal" 🙂

I rarely ever call out sick. I havent taken a sick day in nine months. When I was in college, I took them all the time at my internship. I do occassionally use PTO (an hour here or there) when I have to leave early, etc. We're salaried, but I still try to be honest and use PTO for anything more than an hour. I have about 170 hours of PTO accumulated and I only get to carry over 40 hours at the end of the year. I have an 80 hour vacation (honeymoon) planned in Oct-Nov. I've also requested about 60 additional hours in random days in effort to use up my PTO. I think I'm going to have to take a few more days in addition because I'm still going to be accruing hours.

I've taken 1 1/2 days this year when I was really sick. For doctor appt and such, I try to schedule them around lunch time and just take an extended lunch break.

I'm not sure that I've ever taken a sick day. I've left early a couple of times but not coming in for illness? Lucky me, hasn't happened AFAIK. (Sudafed FTW!)

I used 30hrs in 2007, and this year I've used 68.5 hours. I just returned to work from parental leave; I was able to use some of my sick time after I had used up all my vacation leave.

I've used 3-4 days this year. If they are given I say use them, but it depends on your environment. The last job I left I had 100-150 hours of paid sick leave that I lost, decided Im not going to do that again. I do my work, I don't take off days during projects or busy days or take off every other Friday or anything. If Im having a bad night\morning\day and just don't feel like being at work there isnt much benefit of coming in and keeping my seat warm. Id rather rest\recharge and come in the next day ready to take on whatever.

This is really true and needs to be practiced more. Many people I know, myself included "soldier" in to work sick. While you may think it's nice to work hard and rough it out, most of your coworkers would probably rather see you go home. We absolutely have to in my work because this is a medical center.

Sick days should be taken as needed but many of us take days reliant on our workload, not necessarily hours. Sometimes that means working from home.

Now I'm curious, how many sick days a year do you guys take? On average.

A total of 7 1/2 hours since I've been employed at my current place. I've accumulated over 80-something days worth of sick time. When I retire, the sick time can be cashed in for health insurance. I think each 100 hours is a year, or something like that. Regardless, baring some catastrophic illness, I'll retire with a decade of health insurance.

Previously, I took off 0 hours in 1 year
3 days in 20 years at a part time job (taken to the hospital on 2 of those occasions, severe food poisoning on the 3rd)
and used the majority of my sick time at another job as "stress relief days"

if youre legitimately sick, as many as you need to get well, i suppose.
if youre just sick of work, maybe 2-3....

i havent missed work due to sickness in year +

Huh, that's interesting.

When my position here is complete I get nothing for my sick time. Only my vacation time is paid out to me.
