how many satelites are orbiting the earth right now?

Yesterdays NORAD public catalog lists 8500 objects ... the restricted catalog would add a few dozen more. The highest catalog number is 27853, that's how many NORAD has tracked since the beginning. The difference has decayed & reentered, or was lost by the tracking system. But that's far from the true picture. I've seen estimates that put the number of currently trackable objects at roughly 20K to 30K, and the population of objects >= 1 cm at possibly close to 100K
