There's actually a proper way of doing push ups. Its a lot easier to do push ups if both your hands are further from your chest. Proper way of doing push ups in the military is to have both your hands as close to your chest as possible. I can cheat and do almost infinite amount of push ups if my hands are away from my chest. The distance is shorter when you are doing push ups. Its like doing half push ups if your both of your hands are away from your chest.

There is no 'proper' way that I am aware of.

Hands closer = works your triceps more then your pecs
Hands further = works more your pecs and less your triceps

It isn't cheating. It's only cheating if your back isn't straight and your bending your back so you 'bow' your back towards the floor and you don't go low enough to touch a tennis ball, and you don't straighten your arms properly.

I bet you could not do an 'almost' infinite amount whatever your hand distance is. If you go down low enough to touch a tennis ball with your chest and you go all the way back up so your elbows lock straight and hit 100 I would be impressed .
