How many polygons do current games use?

Like PS3/xbox 360 games? How much can the DX10 graphics cards handle? Whatever happen to that spec?

textures are more important now i think.

Textures help to hide the use of fewer polygons, but the basic geometry is still important.

I've never seen numbers thrown around other than "this guy's face has more polygons than a whole level combined from last generation!"

Don't ask me how I remember this, but I remember back 10 years ago when I purchased Madden 97 or 98 for the PC. One of the selling points on the box was stating that each player had up to 1,500 polygons. I'm sure we've come a long way since then.

It is no longer the important figure it was when the PS2 came out. With the integration of technologies like Normal Maps and displacement maps, devs could trick the user into thinking there was more geometry at play then there actually is. New technologies continue to come out that help this along. Also, shaders (pixel and vertex) have become a very important part of the process with DirectX 9 finally giving the needed flexibility...so nowadays, the shader processing power of a chip is almost just as important to how many polygons it can push.
