Never played the piano, but starting in 2nd grade, I learned to play the viola with a 30 minute lesson every week + practicing time.

Do you really make progress with just one lesson per week?

Could there possibly be enough "meat" in one lesson to give you things to practice for 6 more days before your next one?

Absolutely. I couldn't imagine having more than one lesson a week.

One a week is pretty standard. You learn a new concept, then practice it at least 30 minutes a day for a week. Then you're ready for the next one.

Certainly. It all comes down to practicing enough during the week though. I did 1hr lessons once a week.

1 per week. Was probably 30 minutes. Lady came to the house. Also had recitals every so often. Each lesson I was assigned 4 or 5 songs to work on for the next week. Then I played them for the teacher and if they were good, I'd get 4 or 5 more.

Piano lessons were 1 hour a week with about 1 hour a day practice, tuba lessons were 1 hour a week with 2-3 hours of practice a day.

Once a week, 45 minutes a lesson. I practiced the same length as my lesson every day, so 45 minutes of piano every day; 90 minutes on days of lessons.

i have a question. I'm beginning to learn to play the piano. I've been practicing playing the five keys (cdefg) with my right hand and now I'm at the stage of learning to use 3 more keys (abc) for the right hand. How is one suppose to shift the hand when playing these keys? Is it just the 4 fingers while the right thumb remains on the c key?

An hour a week and at LEAST an hour practicing every day. I can't play it anymore though, never got into it much.

E - 3
F - 1 (hook thumb under)
G - 2
A - 3
B - 4
C - 5

QFT. And back down:

C - 5
B - 4
A - 3
G - 2
F - 1
E - 3 (reach middle finger over)
D - 2
C - 1

It also changes with each key (scale) the piece is in, but that should get you started.

It also changes depending on the song. Lots of time there is fingering written on the music so you know which ones. Other times if the piece is complex it can take a while deciding what fingering to use. Overall, though, there isn't a set rule, except when it comes to scales.

To answer the OP, it was definitely once a week for 9 years. I think I started at 30 minutes and maybe went to 45 minutes later, but I'm not sure.

wow...I'm surprised that many took lessons as kids.

but it sounds like very few still can (or want to) play.

so was it a waste of time, or do you feel you gained something out of it that helped you later on (concentration ability, patience, musical understanding, etc)?
