Seems like a huge risk, I don't think I'll be partaking. Our library is giving out the special glasses. But what if they procured some crappy Chinese glasses? No thanks...

So the whole point is to basically SEE the eclipse. There's nothing special about it actually occurring, so whats the point of actually experiencing it live?

Just look at some of the photos people will inevitably upload taken with DSLR cameras across the US. They will look way better than whatever view you will get as you stare up into the sky hoping you don't blind yourself.

Right. And why bother traveling anywhere? I mean, there are pictures of any sight you want to see on the internet.

I used to stare at the sun when I was a kid. I don't see what the problem is. Plus, paint chips and cat food taste great!

In my car front windshield, the very top strip has a factory tint.

On top I got a strip of 20% tint. So it's very dark. You can make out the sun faintly through the double layer during sunset.

I'll also wear sunglasses. Theae 3 arent prob enough.

No 14 Welding glass works. Had mine for decades, used it several times.

Given the brain power of a lot of folks these days, the media will surely have some stories to report.

Better view this eclipse. Subsequent eclipses will be banned.

All of them, every last person. Eyes get damaged by UV every single time you go outside. Most people die before the damage gets too bad.

My wife works in optics and the past month or so they've been giving eclipse glasses out for free to people who purchase the glasses.

I asked her about getting some the other day for me and she told me that they aren't giving them out anymore because the ones they had were recalled due to them not being protective enough or some shit. However I don't know if the people they already gave them out to know about this or not.

Me personally I don't think I'll really care about it when it happens.

I just made a cereal box viewer. :)
I just tried my cereal box viewer, and the image of the sun was way too small. :(

I think I have another method that works better:

1. Get binoculars or a small telescope.
2. Look through the instrument at a distant horizon to get them focused. Don't look through the instrument at the sun!
3. Place a sheet of white paper behind the optical instrument, about a foot away.
4. Aim the optical instrument at the sun by trying to minimize its shadow.

You should get a nice image of the sun on the paper, much larger than with any pinhole.

I'm just hoping I don't melt any instrument trying this!

Edit: It appears to work! :)
