Whenever I get a bill thats wrong I wonder how many people pay it without noticing the bill is wrong. And even more so when I have to press and say "No thats wrong" when the billing dept says the bill is accurate.

Cable or cell phone bills? all the fucking time. Same with medical bills, often improperly coding something.

Stupid people say "I received a bill for $x, therefore I must pay $x".

You could bill them for breathing air and they probably wouldn't think twice.

Pretty much never.

In fact, for some reason Beaumont has started to send me bills for my co-pay. I'm not sure why considering their policy is to collect it before service is rendered (i.e. I can't see my doctor until I pay the co-pay).

My ophthalmologist sent me an incorrect bill recently from a September visit. They didn't bill insurance properly. They won't get a dime until they send out the correct bill.

How do you know it's wrong? Like who's to say I didn't use that much water? Or the price of water hasn't changed? Or taxes haven't changed? Or my surgery didn't require x amount of gas? I don't know how long I was in surgery for. All I know is I woke up puking from the amount of gas I was given.

Preauthorized payments or bust. I can't imagine having to deal with manually paying all my bills every single month. My time is worth something, so if there is a small mistake on a bill then so be it. If there is a big mistake then I'll realize when I look at my bank statement and I can go check the actual bill to see why it's so high and deal with it then. The only thing I do have to pay manually is my dedicated web server at OVH, which is super annoying that they don't have preauthorized payment system, it's 2017!

For "one ofs" bills then I don't really take much time to analyze it, I'm not going to argue over a few dollars. Now if I was expecting it to be $100 something and it ends up $1000 something then I'll question it.

I use autopay for everything and get email notifications for all of them.

Couldn't in a million years tell you if my gas bill for $42 should really have been $40. But I notice when my Comcast bill goes up $3.50.

How do you know it's wrong?

When I know my deductible is a certain amount and they charge more than that. Or I know the cable modem I've owned for years isn't the cable company's so the rental charge is wrong. Or I know that I only have one DVR so the second one that suddenly showed up needs to be taken off. The price of water is clearly listed on bills as are taxes. It's not hard

Cell phone or cable bill I get. Those should be fairly consistent month to month.

But medical bills? How do you know what the contract rates are with each of your medical providers? I mean I guess you could call the insurance company and see, but it seems like a lot of work to figure out if a bill is right.

For example, you get an EOB from your insurance, so let's say a procedure has $1,000 as the charge, then $847.47 as an in network discount, and then rest is patient responsibility. First, you'd have to figure out if the $1,000 is the right price being charged, and then you have to find out if the $847.47 is the right discount for being an in-network provider. Not super easy to see what should or shouldn't be charged.
