How many people here have worked under a manager/boss who is "too nice"?

Let's face it managers and bosses whether it be retail, IT or buisness are often labelled as assholes. Often this is because they are, positions of power attract them. Sometimes it's because they have to exert control over those under them to get the job done and are resented for it. However sometimes you get a manger or boss who really is nice, and sometimes they are too nice for their own good. Keeping a team working together takes skill. A good manager is friendly and kind but doesn't let employees have way too much free line. I've met people from both ends of the spectrum. Sometimes the boss that everyone likes is not always the best though. One person who comes to mind (in another store) is extremely friendly and care free. His staff all like him but the working environment suffers for it. The place is a mess and some rules that should be enforced aren't.

Anyone worked under such management?

I do. The managers look the other way and the office is a complete mess. People do whatever they want. Literally someone could disappear for a week and nobody would notice.

Those are just assholes like I was saying. I'm talking about people who are very nice to those bellow them too. So much so that they fail to every really "manage".

my last boss (well, I guess he's still technically my boss since he's still got the title of data center manager, but they cut our department in half and now I don't report to him anymore).

we had a couple guys who really needed to shape up or ship out and he kept giving them second chances, looking the other way, etc.

I'm pretty sure that where I work people could take a week off work "sick" and no one would even bother to check up on it. In fact, I'm certain that people around work quite often take half days etc but since no one ever checks they get away with it.

Oh, and 2 hour lunches are very common. I can easily do this myself. No one would notice if I rocked up to work at 9.30am, had a two hour lunch, and left at 3pm. Sadly I have a conscience.
