Trump had no cards to play. People want immigration reform, but the majority does not see the wall as a viable solution. Doesn’t matter, as I expect we will see a round 2 in three weeks, unless Trump defies Congress in allocating other funds to his wall and deploys military resources to build it.

!

I am pissed off.

What I see happening, in three weeks - chuck and nancy will refuse to budge on the wall and trump will shut the government again. This time I hope for months, maybe even years.

If democrats refuse to negotiate, shut it down. Shut the airports down, shut the courts down... shut everything down until the wall is built.

Should be in a fox hole at the border right now. Defending it until the magical wall is built. If you aren't you're just another armchair big mouth pussy.

I love how your definition of "negotiate" is "mindlessly give Trump his vanity project without question." And besides, you know that the more Trump throws his temper tantrums, the more likely it is he'll be voted out next year, right?

Ironically it's the same bill that he agreed to already before changing his mind a few weeks ago.

Since there will never be a bill without wall funding this is a cave, a complete reversal of what he's been saying for over a month. If you prefer to substitute "cave" with "fail" but it amounts to the same thing.

Now the Reps know that the people who do the work of government is not then, but real people with breaking points. They may not care about them but there is an unavoidable point where suffering impacts Republicans in power in very adverse ways.

They pulled their heads out of the guillotine, but will they quickly stick their heads back in before the blade reaches their neck?

I think not and that leaves Trump to play his last card, a deuce against the court's ace.

Then what? Trump was doomed to fold the instant he decided to reject the original bill.

It's perfectly clear Congress won't allow another shutdown. The vote to open the govt shows that.

Didnt nancy and chuck both vote for a wall, or improved border security just a few years ago?

Part of this is typical democrat hypocrisy. The only reason why they are against the wall this time is because trump is president. Even obama said we need better border security.

Shut the government down not because of the wall per say, but because of democrats being hypocrites.

A lot of people are saying he "caved", but it was less a surrender and more a ceasefire. The bill is only for three weeks, after which he can hold the government hostage all over again. And don't think he wouldn't, as after the rebukes from the conservative media, you can be sure he'll be even more adamant about not compromising in round 2.

He can only do that if the Senate Republicans/Mitch McConnell let him, which is highly unlikely at this point.

They've been kicked by the mule once, and once is enough for them.

He fails to understand how politics works. The Republicans almost lost everyone except for people like him and a few others. Once the economic consequences kick in, like almost losing air commerce, then the Reps realized that they were doomed to virtual eviction. Between destroying the nation as Tex advocated and saving their skins Trump had to fold and they are not going to resume eating poison he feeds them in three weeks.

If Mitch were that foolish there will be a revolt and the Senate will move behind Pelosi with a veto-proof bill of her choosing.

So let's be clear on what happens. The air economic sector closes down. The infrastructure of vital services folds in on itself and you have the beginning of a genuine insurrection possibly armed. Yes a nation which starts to fall apart in significant ways is prone to that. Why? Because Democrats are hypocrites.

I hope you are well armed and prepared to kill and die for your cause.

Better border security does not mean a $30B wall. NO ONE is arguing against border security you brain dead lump of rotting flesh. People are against a wall that will be ineffective and expensive to maintain going forward. It doesn't even address the issues Trump continually brings up (mainly drug smuggling).

I think there are good reasons Trump chose to delay it. He wants the Democrats in the room when he blasts them, and he wants it live on all networks. Threads like this are why politics are like they are, this is sports to some of you, it is about your team and cheerleading, not about what is actually in the best interest of America.

Your boy got whupped by reality. He'll get whupped a lot quicker the next time he shuts down the govt even if he's crazy enough to go for it. He burned off political capital like it was going out of style.

You see what you just said --- Didnt nancy and chuck both vote for a wall, or improved border security just a few years ago? -- The point is Trump wants a wall --- No improved border security! They have always differend when it comes to improved border security!
Then you said -- Part of this is typical democrat hypocrisy. The only reason why they are against the wall this time is because trump is president. Even obama said we need better border security.

The sad commentary is we live in the age of do unto other as they do unto you! It`s a sad commentary on what our political system has become.
But the truth is the republicans started this whole mess when they refused to allow Obama`s administration to pass any kind of bill that was not advantageous to the republicans!!
The hypocrisy lies directly in the republicans lap!!
If the Democrats give in to Trump on the wall -- mind you I did not say "Border Security". When the next issue comes up Trump will throw another tantrum and hurt many people who are hard working Americans!!

Hostage taker allows family to see victim for a couple of weeks but after the 3 weeks are up he is going to take them hostage again.

Trump is going along with this because he feels he really needs to do the state of the union speech and he can claim than he is working with the house since they said open government first then we will talk.

Hopefully the house continues to shut down his request for a government funded trump monument along the southern border.

Shut the government down not because of the wall per say, but because of democrats being hypocrites.

Earlier proposals included increased funding for border security. However, the Democrats don't support a full-length border wall, and that $5.7 billion was going to be used to help get it underway (under less-than-honest pretenses).

And besides, there are many good reasons to oppose a border-length wall. It's extremely wasteful; it'll be ineffective unless there's tight human monitoring across the entire length, which won't happen; it'll likely require seizing private property, creating disputes and delays; it'll produce lasting ecological damage to species that need uninterrupted terrain.

I'd also add once more that another shutdown would only further assist the Democrats. You want Trump to stand a snowball's chance of winning in 2020? Sideline the wall. If he wins next year (and that's a big "if"), he can use that as a mandate. He made the initial proposal as a campaign promise without any clue as to how it'd be funded or how it would work. Now that it's confirmed Americans will pay for it, and that it will likely take tens of billions of dollars, Americans can decide if it's actually worth the cost (hint: it isn't).
