These large hard drive mp3 players are clearly targeting music pirates. (Please, no flame fest)

I stole my mp3s so long ago that I believe they should be grandfathered in as legal. Since then its been ripping my own CDs and buying tunes off iTunes Store, because kazaa etc. is useless now.

a lot of mp3's are legal, but at the same token, a lot are not. I own roughly 60% of the 10 gigs or so i have of mp3's.

A good buddy of mine owns around 55gigs of legal mp3's (Via cd's itunes, etc). But i would agree that they can't honestly expect the avg user to have 40 gigs of legal mp3s. Of course the idea there is probally for those with large cd collections.... but regardless, they have to know that not every mp3 in an ipod or muvo or zen or such is legal.

I guess they can get by with saying that the extra space can be used to store data files as well?

BTW 60 GB of legal MP3s is a lot of CDs! (assuming your were encoding at 192)

exactly. I don't have that many mp3s period.

yea i dont even have 1/2 and i thought i had a lot of mp3s

same here.

I have, maybe, 15 gigs in mp3's and I still have a hard time finding songs that I want to listen to.

my iPod (which only has songs that I like almost all the time, to prevent the need for skipping through a dozen mediocre songs to find one good one) only has 5 gigs of music on it.

30GB or so legal here, and that's w/ most still ripped at 128kbps (I'm fixing that 1 CD at a time). So uh, it will be easy to fill. And they support a lossless format now.
30GB legal, and figure most epople have a bunch of crap for music they download...60GB won't be too hard.

Some (iRiver is the only one I can think of offhand, maybe the iPod as well?) follow the Universal Mass Storage standard, and so are portable USB hard drives that just happen to have an mp3 decoder and phono jack.

As it stands now I have 80 gigs of not as legal music but if I ripped my CD collection I could have a little less than 60 gigs of legal music.

whomever has 60GB of LEGAL mp3s either wasted lots of money or needs to find a hobby. 60gigs?! I doubt you'll ever listen to 30% of all the songs more than twice. :frown:

60GB of mp3's is A LOT of mp3's. I have roughly 33GB of mp3's and it totals over 4300 songs.

Yes, a 60GB mp3 player is definitely marketed to pirates, but so what. There's a market for them, so they sell it. Maybe the RIAA should start selling blank optical media, hard drives, mp3 players, and 1TB portable .avi players.

I encode at 192 only from CDs only. And I still can't even fill up my 20 gig iRiver :| I've got to go out and get some more Stones, Zeppelin, and Hendrix CDs :D
