How many people bought chicks or rabbits for easter presents?

Last week I saw an image going around faecbook that said something like, "95% of all rabbits and chicks bought at easter die before they are a year old. Save a life, give your kids chocolate instead of pets".

Do you know anyone that bought pets for easter?

I got a rabbit for Easter once when I was a kid. It mysteriously disappeared when it got really big and fat. We had two ducks, which also disappeared. We suspect our Vietnamese neighbors ate them.

When I was a kid, I got 2 lops for easter. I don't know why. I never said I wanted rabbits. Anyway, I raised em. Turned out both of them were pregnant, so I soon had a whole crapload of rabbits. They lived quite a few years.

Wonder what percent of rabbits make it to 1yr in general. Betting not a lot.

I think the only reason people buy them is because they assume they'll die. If I were a parent, I certainly wouldn't buy my kids a chick if I thought the thing would live more than a couple of months.

On second thought, now I've got something to do Wednesday. I'll bet bunnies, rabbits, and chicks go fairly cheap at the auction. I ought to be able to pick up a couple dozen rabbits. :)

no. I didn't buy any Easter presents... it's not really a present-giving holiday in my book.

Do your goats eat rabbits because those couple dozen will be more in a few years?

I'll just release all the rabbits to find for themselves. If they multiply, so be it. If they don't, oh well. Come fall, shhhhhhhh, be vewwy vewwy quiet, I'm huntin wabbits. <Elmer Fudd laugh>

It's nice heading outside at 6am and seeing a few bunnies hopping around in the yard.

We always send out communications to the papers to try and curb this behaviour, but people don't really care.

Not sure how people do not understand the fact a bunny needs care and can live 10 years or longer. :hmm:

A lot of rabbits that get bought for Easter get surrendered to humane societies a month later. That's definitely a fact since I've seen the press releases numerous times. It's sad really.

Rabbits require the same level of care as a dog or cat. However, they do not like to be played with or picked up. So they don't make good pets for children. Kids tend to think they're small and cuddly and treat them like a stuffed animal. Unfortunately, this can seriously injure the bunny.

Sadly there are an awful lot of stupid people in this world. Always do your homework before getting a pet. It's a living thing, not an impulse item.

when i was a kid our family got a lop eared rabbit named "loppie" for easter. he would pee on the shag carpet. he died when my sister put a rubber band "collar" on him. the pet ship replaced him for a half priced black and white named "flopsie" because the vet had diagnosed loppie with a jaw defect. flopsie died a few years later of natural causes. rip flopsie. he liked lettuce and carrots
