How many people actually read user agreements before hitting "next"?

If I'm really bored, I sometimes glance through it for kicks. You can often find funny stuff there. For example, when I installed Age of Mythology, the EULA said in it:

NOTE ON JAVA SUPPORT. THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT MAY CONTAIN SUPPORT FOR PROGRAMS WRITTEN IN JAVA. JAVA TECHNOLOGY IS NOT FAULT TOLERANT AND IS NOT DESIGNED, MANUFACTURED, OR INTENDED FOR USE OR RESALE AS ON-LINE CONTROL EQUIPMENT IN HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENTS REQUIRING FAIL-SAFE PERFORMANCE, SUCH AS IN THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, AIRCRAFT NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL, DIRECT LIFE SUPPORT MACHINES, OR WEAPONS SYSTEMS, IN WHICH THE FAILURE OF JAVA TECHNOLOGY COULD LEAD DIRECTLY TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE.

Nope. If they could boil them down into a simple synopsis instead of pages upon pages of legalese, I might actually bother to read them.

I did realize upon installing Windows XP that I had signed myself on to be a towel boy in Bill Gates' mansion.

We need some in-between choices...
I skim through them mainly looking for DRM clauses, don't usually read thoroughly.

The license agreement for K-Lite says in the 2nd paragraph: "It is illegal to install this software."

Actually, since the majority of people just click through, there's lawsuits pending the make EULA's null and void, and put something better/more understandable in it's place

I'll read some if they are BEFORE I buy something. But not if they are after... and before I can use it.


For example if I'm going to sign up for an ISP I'll read the Terms of Service beforehand, to see what kind of crap rules they have.

But for software 'next next next next OK'
