<erno> hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.

What is embeeded? Is that like an abacus or something? Don't think that one counts, pal. ;)

I remember hearing about something similar at stanford ....basically there was this old 486 that was still running, but a wall had been put off entraping it...

Total 9 desktops and 3 laptops

7 of the 9 desktops are plugged in and running (one server), the other two, one is used for work and I haven't found a good place for it and the other is htpc that is going in the living room. All three laptops are from work, one is my work laptop, one is my old work laptop that sits behind the couch for when I want to look up something on the internet over wifi, and the third is an old pentium 2 400ish that I haven't found a use for. Currently I use 3 kvms, a 4 porter that has my main game machine, email machine, server, and docking station for laptop. One kvm has my pc I use for im chatting and general browsing and the other pc is just a bittorrent machine. Other kvm has my linux machine and back up gaming pc (or used to dual box when I used to play Dark Ages of Camelot). Overkill?? You betcha :) Just have been too lazy to try to part any of them out.

I use a netgear 8 port router with a 8 port hub(used for a few of the pcs with low traffic) and a netgear wifi router to connect my wifi laptops and pda.

some of you people are insane...

and I thought having an embeeded pc as a router and two APs was overkill:eek: (one is a hotspot)

Yes it's overkill, I just kept aquiring, I would build then build a new one and so on and never got rid of the old ones. I've thought seriously about buying a cisco pix firewall off geeks.com to tinker with to get more experience in them :)

I used to have this really neat setup when we lived in our other house. It was three 19" monitors on a big long desktop, but under it were 3 different towers, but all of them running one keyboard and mouse, via a switch. I had win98se, win2k pro, and linux. I ran them 24/7 and could work on any of them, just by switching. It looked bad ass, like a command center for mission control.

if I could find the right furniture for the right price, I'd love to integrate my 2nd home theater system into my hive of computers :) I'd like to find long bench setup with some cabinet space to properly setup my computers maybe even a rack for towers. It will be much better after I get my new lcd so I can have another lcd and get rid of another crt monitor.

Why the crap do some of you have 9+ computers in your homes? I could see 2 or 3, but 9+? Come on. And some of the reasons you guys list for having different computers is ridiculous...this one is for email, this one is for chatting; this one is for surfing the web. Guess what, my one computer can do all of that, at the same time! It's crazy I know. I can?t even imagine how hot those rooms must get too. My one computer heats up my 12'x12' room pretty well in the summer time, I couldn?t imagine 9 of them!
