I work in an office of about 20 people and I think only a few people take breaks to smoke. The rest are constantly being summoned to the Office of the Grand Pubah. This place is so fucked up that a couple people just smoke in their offices.

I'm salaried and I think we have to be here 9-5. I've been here 3 years and have no idea how much sick-time/vacation we get. I usually take a couple weeks of but I don't think anyone is counting.

Depends if your manager is a micromanaging dickwad or not. I hate the authoritarian style of management and for upper management to have to write a policy on breaks shows what an awful culture they have. And if your workforce is also that unmotivated that they abuse leisure time, then I would blame management as well.

I'm salaried, but I'm required to take an hour off for lunch at a specified time to make sure that we have continuous support coverage.

I can't really complain about this policy, though, since I'm the support lead who has to enforce the policy :)

Officially I get two 15 minutes paid and one 30 minute unpaid, however realistically I get as many breaks as I want as long as I get my work done. I never realized anyone monitored bathroom breaks in the 1st world...
This is my day too. I dont even think its legal to monitor bathroom breaks.

Well there is nothing "illegal" about monitoring bathroom breaks, that is unless you discriminate, and only wimminz get to pee, or only black guys (discrimination is illegal).

Here in Florida (America's Wang) - land of no dept of labor and the fewest employment laws anywhere in the union, employers can pretty much do whatever they want, including require you to not smoke anymore. Period. Like quit smoking or you are fired, smoker.

My boss doesn't allow smoking breaks, but we can take big fat dumps all day long. It isn't "fair" to the non-smokers. Granted just about nobody is a smoker here anymore, and nobody is hourly either so - non-issue.

Officially, two 15 minute breaks.

Unofficially, doesn't really matter as long as my work gets done.

breaks are overrated...I just freeflow my lunches ... sometimes an hour, sometimes 2-2.5 hours.

the only people that get breaks are smokers (every friggin 15 minutes it seems like), and they complain they never get breaks.

I'm technically an hourly employee but do not clock in or out. Boss is pretty flexible as long as the job gets done. I'm Senior Systems Support here at my organization, so if things get crazy I could be at my desk for 4-5 hours straight. But other days when things are slow, I take several breaks a day just to get off my chair and my eyes of the screen for a bit.

An hourly job I had before this one was two ten minute breaks and a half hour lunch.

2 15 minute paid breaks (cannot leave the building), 1 hour mandatory lunch (unpaid-can leave the building) in a 9 hour schedule. :\

LOL at the bathroom breaks, I tell people that I supervise not to even ask for permission, just go.

I work for a company that doesn't babysit you to the second like that. If you need a break, make sure your stuff is covered. Sick? Make sure your stuff is covered. Dentist, having to pick up kids early from work, funeral, whatever... as long as you aren't abusing anything there's no "break time" or "sick days" or anything like that.

I take breaks whenever/how long I feel like it, but some discretion is advised. Basically, same as gorcorps. Sad thing is the air force is less militant about breaks than most people's work who post here. Although if I was in security forces or something it'd be a lot different.

I can take breaks whenever, for however long I feel like pretty much. I'm salaried, but I don't have set hours really. As long as I'm meeting deadlines and work is getting done I can work to my schedule.
