How many of you would risk jail to make a stand like this...

Technically, federal income tax is unconstitutional. Let's hop he wins!

No it's not. As a Libertarian and as much as it pains me to say it, the federal income tax is Constitutional. Of course they had to pass the Sixteenth Amendment to make it so, and I would repeal it in an instant if I had the power, but it's there and nothing we can do about it (at the moment).

Amendment XVI (1913)
Income Tax Authorized

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several states, and without regard to any census of enumeration.

Amendment 16 changed Article. 1. Section. 2. Clause 3.
Amendment 16 changed Article. 1. Section. 9. Clause 4.

tried to conceal his earnings by transferring assets to fraudulent trusts and overseas bank accounts.

WTH is a " fraudulent trust" sound like a case of selective prosecution to me and I hope he beats it. Maybe they are just pissed he did'nt use tax attoneys to set it up or know he does'n have the wherewithal to beat it. Can't have to little guys setting up trusts like Kerry and them do to pay no taxes.

An idiot and a criminal for not wanting to keep what is peacefully his? In my book he is a hero. Not only is tax evasion perfectly moral, but it is a great boon to the economy. Rock on tax evaders, you have my 100% support! Stick it to the man!

Doh!

Good for him though - he made his stand. Now hopefully he'll take his punishment for breaking the law.:)

During the Vietnam war, many, many, many committed pacifist Quakers did so bravely and willingly and totally openly, without trying "to conceal [their] earnings by transferring assets to fraudulent trusts and overseas bank accounts . . .'

For doing so, they eventually lost ther houses, their savings, everything. Time and time again, at the sheriff sales of their houses, other Quakers would band together and buy it back for them. About their bank accounts and life portfolios, however, nothing could be done.

I may disagree with them, but I admire them. They are men and women of shining pure principle, and they have been willing, time and time and time again, to put their money and their safety and their security and sometimes even their lives where their mouths are.

I can have some respect for that (even if I disagree with it), this guy is just a common criminal.

This is coming from a social-democratic socialist who puts their full faith and credit in the mega-state? Wow.

His crime was not in not filing, but in not paying his taxes. IRS came after me for the same thing a few years back. They claimed I owed them $27K. When the dust settled, they had paid me $13K and admitted that I deserved another $8K back, but the 3-year limit allowed them to keep it. I just don't like doing their accounting for them and doing it for free. I have a mortgage with an escrow account. At the end of the year, they send me a check or I send them one. That is the way I would like the tax system to work. If my bank can do it, why the hvll can't the IRS? Reasonable taxes and a simple system. Is that too much to ask?

Liberals don't want to pay taxes, they want to collect transfer payments and benefits from those who do.

I think the 15th or 16th amendment made it legal. I knew that pretty well a few years back.
15th gave males of all races the right to vote. 16th said congress can collect income taxes.

I wonder why glugglug has disappeared from this thread :(

I see the need for the government to collect taxes. Government business isn't done for free. I think our system is wrong. I think the states should collect from the individual (or the city, or the county, etc) and the Federal government should collect from the state. That was the original union.

That is real BS and you opened yourself for this one. Kerry and frau paid less than a quarter of the taxes that Bush did and they made many times more money. Go ahead and defend that one.

Taxes are the law, so I will pay my taxes whether I like them or not. And while the idea of a society maintaining a government without taxes is ideal, it is simply not practical IMO. Plus there are some services that I don't mind paying taxes for, like roads as an example. What needs to be focused on is the containment and limitation of government, and by doing such bring the tax rates down.
