I only knew 3 people who were home schooled. They were all hardcore religious people. One of them insisted her aunt had a miracle baby without sex, just like Mary.

Every homeschooler I know (and I have a coworker that has six kids his wife homeschools) fits the hardcore religious mould. They weren't nutty religious though. Just very conservative in values without being obtuse about it. All of their kids were home schooled through Jr. High and then entered the public high school system. All of them had had exceptional grades and were top of their classes...they were just really hard workers.

Am I wrong, or is there a huge correlation between home schooling and hardcore religitards?

Public school here. Maybe you should expand your poll to public/private/home schooled.

I know a woman who homeschools her three kids. She isn't hardcore christian or anything, almost exactly the opposite. She is very liberal in her views and her lifestyle. Her kids have it pretty good, they ski (race) 100+ days a year, are all very good athletes and very social kids.

When I was in High School, the kids that came from homeschool were usually pretty socially awkward and shy. Her kids are very outgoing.

Public school system.

I've only known one homeschooled kid, and his parents weren't crazy religious. They just think American schools suck ass and his dad made enough money for his mom to stay home.

When his mom couldn't teach him math anymore he taught himself calculus for shits and giggles. Eventually they put him in my high school since it wasn't a full on "public" high school (they could kick you out and fire shit teachers).

That's very cool, but I have to wonder if that's a rare outcome of homeschooling.

No, but my daughter was up through fourth grade. She's now in fifth grade at a private school. Screw the public schools.

I was homeschooled up through eighth grade, then I enrolled in a public high school. I graduated valedictorian. I'm a lazy slob.

Wow, you're pretty hard on public education.

Both my parents taught in public schools for their careers.

Biggest problem that prevents someone from getting an education is parental apathy, in my opinion. But it is a free country, people are entitled to teach their children how they see fit.

Wow, you're pretty hard on public education.

Where are you reading that? Children who attend private schools (well, non-religious private schools) will also be exposed to differing viewpoints, and increased opportunities for socialization, as compared to homeschooling.

He's anti-homeschooling, but that doesn't automatically make him pro-public schooling.

based on 2 replies in a single thread...i'd totally say there's a correlation!

I knew somebody that was home schooled too, but their parents were really weird hippies...

I was homeschooled up until college. While we were a religious family (ie, we went to church), homeschooling was never about indoctrinating us. We were always given the option of going to a public school if we wanted (both my older sisters opted for a year of public highschool, my younger brother is also taking some classes at a private school).

We were homeschooled because our public schools did a terrible job working with students that excelled in one area and didn't in another. All of us went to college full time at 15 or 16 (my order sister managed to graduate college while she was still 18)

Anyway, in short, homeschooling can be awesome if done right. But there are a good percentage of "crazies" who give homeschooling a bad name. So make fun of the crazies all you want, but that doesn't mean homeschooling itself is a crazy idea

Not I. But sometimes I wish I had been.

I think most of you know I am 30 and had to go back to college recently. The kiddies do not impress me. They are stupid and lazy and spoiled horribly.
BUT, one young gal did impress me in many ways academically. As it turns out she was home schooled, and she is far more sociable and mature than anyone else there. I'd marry her, but she's too good for me and 11 years younger. If I were tall and cute and successful I could totally have her.

Woah, woah...easy there big shooter. Let's not talk about marriage yet :p.

You absolutely deserve to date a mature girl (sounds like she's the emotionally mature equivalent of a 25-26 year old) so don't let the age gap worry you. Your physical appearance doesn't mean shit to her, and you know it - your personality does. And I would argue that anyone pursuing more schooling is trying to improve their life. That is the very definition of being successful.

Not trying to kiss your ass or anything, but I hate to see defeatist statements like that. Just go for it.
