How many of you use projectors to game? Or for your HTPC?

I managed to get a projector for ~$500 on Black Friday and have put abou a 150 hours on it so far. Mainly, it has been used to play computer games. COD2 and Quake4 have been a blast to play, as well as various consoles. I have very nearly stopped playing games on my excellent 21" Sony G520P dislpay, preferring to sit in my Laz-y-boy and to share the wireless keyboard and mouse with my friends.

What has been particularly interesting is how many of my fellow computer enthusiasts from school have seen it/played on it and have sworn that it is hands down the best way to play computer games.

One of the downfalls of cheap projectors is the low resolution (800*600 or 1024*768). On the upside, that means you can use a fairly mainstream card, like a 6800GT, and have very good performance even in the newest and most demanding games.

Since this forum tends to be at the high end of the computing spectrum, I am curious as to how many others there are out there enjoying the very large screen area that a projector can afford.

* I would say that the benfit of having such a large screen is better than having SLI. It is much more immersive, on an actual physical level, than very high frame rates.

Basically, for $1500 or so, you can get a projector, a decent HTPC, and even a good sound setup if you wait and hit good deals. That is less than some spend on just a tower.

While I've never done it my self. I have friends who swear by projectors. Once I get a place where I can integrate a projector I will definitely try it out.

Too poor for a prjector.

Even a sweet deal like you got for $500 sounds like a nice new video card or a lot of alcohol to me!

I use my computer for so many things other then gaming, it seems like so much of hassle that I just prefer my CRT

I am surfing the web and replying to this post sitting in my recliner from 12' away... it is crazy nice if you ever get the chance to try it.

I wish that I could have had this setup when I had more team coding classes in school, it would have been so much nice than crowding around my desk.

If I could afford a good projector with high contrast and a decent resolution, I think I would prefer it to any computer monitor for games.

My roomate last year had one and he used to play xbox and have films in his room - it was damn sweet XBox looked pretty good despite it's very low resolution while films worked very very well.

Of course student living and projector = crazy and not practical at all heh ...I guess it's all about priorities ;-) I always wanted to hook up my pc to it by I couldn't bear lugging my pc downstairs and having to untie all the cables and then re-connect them afterwards twice.

He bought his from ebay second hand and so got it pretty cheap as they go. Might be a way to get a better spec projector cheap. Either way couldn't beat that setup - so yes would be great for PC stuff but more importantly would be even better for having friends round for any other stuff too - films, tv, consoles etc.

Btw lower resolution + projector = full detail AND *no ghosting* 'goodness'.

For general stuff like browsing, working etc I'd still stick with an LCD/CRT screen as having a nice sharp screen while being able to sit at a desk is pretty important - though of course you weren't asking that.

Welcome to the club!

I also have a great 21" monitor that is rarely used anymore.

100" DLP is the way to game.
Plus, chances are you also have a great sound system, with real speakers.
True surround sound gaming that shakes the room.

Sitting on the sofa as I type, but using a 17" gaming laptop.
No need in firing up the pj unless gaming or TV/movie watching.
Only use the 21" in the morning when checking email.
Gaming is done with laptop or DLP.

It is not a TV. It is a gigantic monitor. Connects with video cards VGA out (or DVI if supported).
