I frequent this business because of their beer selection, they carry alot of beer that cannot be found @ your average grocery store.
I recently was made aware of a policy that they have about selling beer:

If anyone in the group of people are not 21 they cannot/will not sell anyone in the group beer/alcohol.

I went in with a friend both of us being of age and they asked for both of our ID's, weird looks exchanged but no problem we go on our way.

A week later we go out again, this time he brings his GF who is our designated driver, we go out to eat and enjoy some alcohol. Upon getting our check we decide it will be cheaper and more fun to chill at one of our houses and drink store bought. We head over to Harris Teeter, All of us go in her to get some ice cream and us to pick from their wide selection of beer. We head to the check out,

clerk: can I see both of your ID's?
us: Sure we hand him the ID's
clerk: Is she with you(it was pretty obvious)
us: Yes?
clerk: I need to see her ID.
me: Shes not buying the beer, shes not of age...
clerk: I have to get the manager, we arent supposed to sell alcohol unless everyone is of age.
me: Ok?
manager: Can I see your ID's
us: sure
manager: what about her shes with you I need her ID.
us: we already explained that she isnt of age.
manager: we will not sell you alcohol, unless everyone is of age in your group

***We were buying 2 six packs!***

me*getting angry*: Ok, I guess you lost a sale...
manager: Thats fine
me: profanity and vulgar insults!
manager: what I couldnt hear you
By this time we were almost to the door
me: *yelling* repeat of said offensive remarks!
manager*standing there with a look of irritation*: "sigh"

I know that breaking down and cursing @ him wasnt the answer, but I couldnt take it. To me this is stupid and unfair
I could understand if we were buying 4 cases and had 4 teenagers with us. It was me im 26 my friend 21 and his GF 19 *dont ask*.

This happened a week ago friday. Today I go back to get a customer service # or talk to a manager because the "nite" manager that we had contact with wasnt old enough to drink! I walk in grab a customer brochure and look around, the customer service rep comes out and asks to help I begin by asking him about the policy.

me: Whats the deal on your alcohol sale policy.
CSR: Its our store and thats our rule
me: Dont you think its a bit unfair?
CSR: Not at all
me: What if I came in with my child?
CSR: That would be an "ify" situation
me: excuse me? "ify" situation?. you mean to tell me that if I came in with my kid and wanted to buy beer you wouldnt sell it to me?
CSR: thats our rule
me: thanks for the information

Im very frustrated.

we dont have one anywhere close by here, but i've been to them before. Its not some place i'd ever shop as my first choice, unless i had to go there.

its like the name brand of grocery stores, it annoys me. I'll stick to foodlion.

I personally only shop at Harris Teeter. They have the best service/prices IMHO. I rarely go to Bi-Lo, Food Lion, or Winn-Dixie.

That being said, I don't drink alcohol, so I can't comment on the whole ID issue.

They are trying to prevent people buying alcohol for minors. Problem is it has to be a blanket policy and people get stuck by it.

Harris Teeter is awesome. They're one of the top grocery stores in the nation.

Besides, carding everyone with they buyer is a North Carolina policy. If you're not in NC, perhaps it's because HT is HQed here.

Exactly, if you are going to buy beer the next time, tell your friends to stay the f*&k in the car or not to stand with you at the checkout line:D It's a VERY reasonable law IMHO.

This has only happened to me once. We were at Bruno's to get some wine for a meal and a 6 pack a beer for a football game that weekend. It was me my cousin and his friend. My cousin is 25 and his friend is 26. We had about 200$ worth of grocerys and they asked for everyone's id. I simply said I don't have my wallet on me. Truthfully I didn't because I wasn't driving and had left it at home. We have gotten beer numerous times at Bruno's and this is the only time it happened.

I always wondered what would happen if it was a parent and their teenage son or daughter. Good rule I guess to prevent the idiots out there from buying a case of beer for every 16 year old kid out there.

It is a CYA policy and I agree with it.

LOL dude, chill :) Seriously though, if you don't want to deal with the rules, you have find a way to get around them. And if your friends are going to get carded (which in turn makes you miss out on your beer), tell them to stay the hell away from the checkout counter when you purchase the goods. Makes sense to me :D
